Something made this inevitable: Paramount, about 2 years after 4K remastered Blu Ray (paid for by another studio)! If this is what it takes to get the disc we wanted all along--so be it. Paid $16.49 for the previous SF Blu Ray and will grab this one on sale too!

I DO think that studios and boutiques have been gauging the viability and prioritization of uhd releases at least partly based on sales activity and overall consumer reception of remastered blu rays over the last several years. It’s a natural part of business progress and product selection when you’re responsible for making good financial decisions in the transition to the most recent media platforms. It’s quite likely that if we weren’t spending to upgrade our 10-year old blu rays with remastered blu rays over the last few years, we perhaps wouldn’t be seeing nearly as many uhd back-catalog releases rolling out right now. I really don’t see it as double-dipping the way you’d buy another 1080p blu ray with a better master or more updated scan. Uhd is a different platform with its own unique attributes, performing above the standard blu ray platform. It’s more of an “upgrade” in my mind than a typical double-dip.

I have to wonder how much of an upgrade in 4K this will be. True, it is a new scan but is this really 4K material?

So what makes something 4K material?

The limitations of the source. Yes, it could have marginal improvements but, like “The Changeling” with George C. Scott, depending on the source, condition, film stock, choices by the cinematographer/director etc., it may not benefit from the upgrade as well. YMMV of course. Just speculation, opinions, etc.

THe BD is a 4K scan from the OCN, so I don't think there's any source limitations here. I'm not sure if they're doing a new scan, or utilizing that previous one in any way, but it did get fairly strong marks for PQ. If they add HDR/Dolby Vision, like most of their releases, it'll likely also be an improvement in that regard too.

Ghoulies looks great in 4K. I wouldn't worry about this.

Salem's Lot's blu had similar issues as the IT BD did, but not nearly as noticeable or severe

Yes I know, I was commenting in general about some of the limitations that can arise as to whether something would have a large improvement in 4K (and gave “The Changling” as an example of a film that didn’t significantly improve IMHO from the blu though that had the inter positive as the source which has less info than the OCN).

I’ve already purchase the upgrade to 4K for “The Dead Zone” being released in December but there are instances where the upgrade is modest. No shade on anyone who wants to always upgrade to 4K but I look at all of these factors before deciding on upgrading or not. Too. Any triple or quad dips.

I noticed both this and Clue came out of the gate at $40. I can't do $40. I accepted $27 a pop as the cost of doing business but I'm never going to accept 40 a pop. C'mon, I'm already moving money from the groceries as it is. Work with me here!

Kinda funny to think Kino were like, "Three audio tracks? That's absurd." Meanwhile Shout are like, "How many commentaries do you want? Is five okay?"

Already got the blu, but it's one of my favourite Cronenberg films and think the 4K would be a decent upgrade.

It's been ages since I bought a Shout release - where's the best place for a UK order these days? (also considering The Blob 4K)
