As a Besson fan I’ll see it at some point but I’ve no enthusiasm for it.

But like, it would be perfect to have a Frankenstein and Dracula movie face off against each other. |

It's far from proper canon - the author's name should've never been used for that film, in my opinion. Stoker wrote that in Dracula's eyes, Mina was merely another pawn, a vessel to spread his selfish curse...nothing more. The love affair aspect and his renouncing God are inventions by Coppola and screenwriter James V. Hart; the book itself purposely leaves a lot to the reader's imagination. By contrast, the 1977 BBC miniseries is often hailed as closest to the text.

It is, but it's a dry, stuffy production. I would like to see something with that dedication to the book, with a bit more memorable production value akin to Coppola's and maybe Besson's version. The love story is no doubt an attempt to lure female participation in the audience. Fans of Dracula are going to see it anyway.

In many ways it looks so much like Coppola's version, visually, as well as content wise. I don't understand why someone like Luc Besson would not seek to be definitive in his choices.

This tidbit probably explains alot though.
![]() Because let's be honest, no one is gonna top what Coppola did (especially Eggers), so you might as just extend on it. Huzzah! Would have been nice to see Besson do a straight up horror though. |

The film's rating speaks for itself whether Eggers did well or not. But there will always be those who are dissatisfied.

I would like to see Bram Stoker's novel adapted 'William Friedkin style'. Meaning, realistic as if it is a documentary from the 1890s. No love story, no epic visuals, strip away the Gothic aesthetics. Just... very creepy and deeply unsettling. Robert Eggers did a terrific job at making the vampyr scary again.
I agree, the Besson film is a vague remake of Coppola's masterpiece. I have no idea why Besson would spend so much time and effort doing that. |

Gary Oldman gave the best Dracula performance, IMO, but I would stop way short of calling Coppola's film a masterpiece. The love story being the worst part, as it gives the personification of evil, an undeserved victim status, but some of the casting was head-scratching. I'll probably enjoy Besson's attempt, but still await a version like the BBC's 1977 version with better casting and set pieces.

How good we talking here? That is 1970's television production budget. |
