Theres nothing "unrated" in the unrated version. Literally not a single added bit of action or violence. So I dont see the issues here. Its the definition of false advertising to sell more discs back then.

Yeah, unrated is usually associated with extra violence not suitable for an R rating, but in reality unrated means there's a version edited together which has not been submitted to the MPA.

I always wondered if those unrated versions have an alternate end credits which don't mention the MPA + number at the end.

Obviously it would be clear to you, but who here, reading your post, would know that? All we have is what you wrote. You provided no context whatsoever.

So for the sake of clarity, you have seen ALL the theatrical cuts (in the theatre) of the extended versions you prefer on physical media?

This is the type of movie where every 1% of picture improvement is going to go a long way. Very dark and high production value. On DVD much of the movie's best traits feel hidden behind a fog.

That's interesting. I had no idea. I might have to look at both versions and decide. Thank you.

Received my copy from Shout Factory today. Here are some photos of the 4k.

Disclaimer: Photos taken with an iPhone - it'll look significantly better in person.

Disc - BD-100

PQ - 4k Dolby Vision - I think it looks really good. There's a nice layer of grain. Rhona Mitra in 4k...WOW!

There are some stylized shots that look softer than the rest of the film.
** Keep in mind that I briefly skimmed through the disc.

AQ - DTS-MA 5.1 - Impressive, robust sound; car chases, explosions, gunfire sound great.

This is pretty much a Mad Max ripoff, which is strange considering even Mad Max jumped the shark, Furiosa was boring as hell.

I remember the Unrated version craze of the early 2000s, but every studio was doing it, even Disney. Then it was the extended cuts craze and then the directors cut craze. It got so out of hand everyone expected new cuts, even today.

People don’t expect extended cuts of every movie some don’t need them some do. But people do expect to have the extended,DC, unrated cuts available on 4K. There’s no reason why studios shouldn’t be putting those cuts on 4K when they’ve been available on dvd and Blu-ray.

My copy from Amazon arrived today. Looking forward to firing this up. Rhona Mitra roaming the post apocalyptic wasteland in a Bentley. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Watched the 4K of the theatrical cut last night and the film is still as fun as the first time. Great Escape From New York and Mad Max mashup. I have a Samsung TV and used the PS5 for the player so I can't comment on the Dolby vision but it looked and sounded great on my system.

I watched the 4K of the theatrical cut last night and thought it looked fantastic with Dolby Vision. A huge upgrade over the ancient bluray. As a few others have also mentioned, Rhona Mitra + 4K = wow! While I do think it is odd that they remastered the so-called pointless "unrated" cut in 4K but relegated it to a standard blu-ray disc, the theatrical cut is the better paced version in my opinion so I am happy.

I also get Resident Evil vibes from this movie.

Hey at least we got both versions minimal those the differences are. The theatrical cut is the better of the two.

It’s a nice upgrade. Sharper detail, better depth. There was some black crush on the Blu-ray as I recall (which I sold the day after I got the 4k). Since this can be such a dark film at times, there’s detail lost even in the blu that is improved here. The real estate is devoted to providing the best presentation of the TC in 4 K as possible with the extras (except commentary) on the Blu-ray Discs.
