The wording makes me think they may just clone their standard Blus and release them stateside with subs like this set (the Minus One and Minus Color Blu-rays are sold in separate standard editions in Japan).

However, if all they do is clone their releases and add subs that could mean there will be no standard 4K edition since there isn't a standard (non 4-disc set) edition of the 4K available anywhere worldwide, including Japan.

Yup, the booklets will also just be in Japanese. Identical to the JP set but with English subs for the movie

I went ahead and locked in a pre-order, despite feeling like this is 100% a lazy cashgrab release due to recent internet things. The exclusion of English Subtitles on the included 4th Bluray for special features is what gives it away.

But there's no guarantee that we won't be skimped on a future release on 4K. So I won't take my chances. I'll double dip if a future release includes Minus Color in 4K and/or Special Features in English sub.

I have the Japanese 4k special edition that's unopened. Debating whether to get this version or just wait for an (hopefully) eventual basic 4k release.

This is the reason why I didn't order the Japanese edition even though I was ordering 6-7 movies from there at the time. I don't read or speak Japanese so was a total waste of money.

If Toho really wanted to go the extra mile, they would've added subtitles for the bonus content. That would make this release very special, rather than just be a direct import. I would've love to reach the printed material in English.

I might have to wait to see how Janus Films handle their own release. I did read that Janus got the home video rights.

If this is a direct import, wouldn't this mean the films in this set would have the "G -1.0" logo in the end of the movie, rather than "G Minus One" on the international version?

Useless bonus disc or not, I'm helpless against this release. I placed the order without much hesitation. I'm just happy to get a 4K. The minus color version is a nice bonus, even if it's only on blu-ray. This movie was in my top three of 2023.

It has English subs which the Japanese release did not have, so it's not a direct import. Whether anything else is changed remains to be seen.

"Direct import" may not be the right term, but if all they did is reauthored the movie discs to include the English subs and English menus, then the movie itself would remain untouched from the JP release.

The account that originated the rumor Janus has this is known to lie, they're just an alt of 'the discfather'/whatever name he goes by now. There's no actual evidence that Janus will be releasing this title anytime soon (if it all).
