Same here. Doesn't really hit the "horror" aspect until the final third, but I didn't have a problem with that as the whole film is a quality production.

So many of Japanese genre films of the 1960s were essentially B-movies made with practically A-list talent at every level, or so it seems to me.

i'm not usually one for extras, but kiyoshi kurosawa's interview on this explains the subtleties in how this version differs which make the build to the final third more disturbing and interesting.

Agreed. I wasn't aware this is such a popular tale that has been filmed several times.

i don't really like films being turned into (or assumed to be) academic exercises, so i'm not in the habit of studying them through booklets and videos.

i did know the story of yotsuya kaidan already, so was puzzled by the variation on it when watching this version. kiyoshi kurosawa does explain them well, but i'd say it was accidental that i wasn't simply left puzzled.

I just finished The Snow Woman. This is the third adaptation of this story I’ve seen, I think. That being said, this one is my favorite. It was absolutely beautiful.

Did the postcards end up getting pulled from this set?

My copy only had a booklet - no postcards. I don't recall if any were ever announced.

The initial announcement did list 6 postcards as it's listed still in the first post. I guess they dropped them from the description at some point.

I really liked the films in this set. Can anybody recommend any others ? I own most of the main Japanese titles from Criterion minus "Ugetsu" I still need to watch that one.

So looks like this sold really well and is almost sold out. I think a second set would make sense at this point.

One of the very best I've seen from Japanese horror from the era is Bakeneko. Only problem is that it's part of a set with 20+ other films from Severin. Maybe it will get a standalone release. I actually enjoyed it more than almost any horror from the era outside of maybe Kwaidan.

Awesome thank you I will for sure keep an eye on it. Hopefully it does get a standalone release.
I'm really digging Daiei film's production style.

I'm pretty sure there will be a second set and this will be one of the titles as it was rumored to be part of the first set before it was even formally announced.

UK was like 99% and US was 85%. It's a great set.

If there's a second set I'm definitely buying. I was a bit worried about this first set since it was a blind buy, but I ended up loving it.

Couple of things...this is 99% sold out, so if you want it it's going to be sold out soon.

Second, Radiance announced The Tale of Oiwa's Ghost for sale in June. Well, this film pretty much 100% fits in with this set, so I highly suggest checking this out if you liked those films. Only difference is that it's from Toei, but honestly it's better than all the films in the Daiei set. You even get Tomisaburo Wakayama playing a pretty intense villain. Fantastic film and hopefully more Tai Kato films in the works.

It's another re-make of Ghost Of Yotsuya from this set. I really enjoyed the whole set. I thought the Kenji Misumi would be the best, but it was actually my least favorite. His Sleepy Eyes, Zatoichi, and LW&C entries are among my favorites.

He's a great director. I think his best films were the Lone Wolf films as well as his grand finale The Last Samurai which is easily his most epic film, but still prefer the Lone Wolf films. Criteron has his sword trilogy so hopefully they release that somewhat soon, but I'd consider him one of the best if not best Daiei director.
