Awesome, I’ve been hoping for a release like this for years. I was always disappointed the Blu-ray release was barebones. I loved the sequel when I was a kid but find it hard to sit through now. The less said about 3 the better.

I was 8 when this movie came out, and I remember the action figure sections being totally cleaned out for the Turtles. The only one that was always there was Leather Head, I guess nobody wanted that one lol.

This has to be my favorite comedic scene from the film.

There's so many joyous moments, but also some fairly dark ones like the kidnapping of Splinter and Hamato Yoshi's murder by the Shredder. You don't get that kind of contrast in a lot of comic-based films today, especially those aimed at younger kids like the original TMNT films were. I am truly excited for the 4K release, because even for Blu-Ray the picture quality looked somewhat lower-grade. I know it was an independent production, but other films have come out which had better results overall.

Whoever's responsible for the 4K restoration needs to be given the time and money to do it right - a clean scan from the original negative, removing dust and scratches, color grading, sound design, the works. If handled properly, it could very likely be the leading 4K purchase for any studio over the whole 2025 calendar year.

This is exciting news. Golden Harvest supposedly made a 4K recently but I don't trust them to do it good, I hope it's Warner. I also wish they'd do the trilogy at once but something tells me it's just gonna be this one.

Well, if this ends up 4K only, at least I have the trilogy BD set in a slim case. Those Warner triple feature sets were good for this, getting a series in the slimmest package possible. Never went for the ones that combined random films.

I wouldn't trust Warner either, especially after the whole A Nightmare on Elm Street debacle. Based on some of the comments made, I hope it's a boutique label like Arrow handling it. They'll respect the grain.

It wasn't an arbitrary thing. While the first film being made, Judith was 22 years old, and her only high-profile screen credit was the Robin Williams comedy Cadillac Man. Judith criticized production company Golden Harvest for the original film's 6-day schedule, how the non-union stunt doubles were being poorly treated, and also voiced concerns that in her view, the movie was focusing on too much extreme violence. Because of those firm stances, Judith was not brought back, replaced by Paige Turco who the producers and directors said more resembled the comic character anyway. Interestingly enough, her complaints in that last remark wound up being shared by several parental groups, which is why the Turtles didn't use their weapons in Secret of the Ooze.

Meh. By that rule, no studio ever makes good discs.

An old quick comparison I did of the P+ stream and the old blu-ray, a while ago.

While the old BD looks sharpened/noisy, I think I'd take that over the P+. DNR over the top on those caps. Hopefully the disc won't be like that.

Yeah, I've heard about somexof it after the fact, but my 11 year old self wasn't hearing about any of that.

Take anything that Moviefan2k4 says with a massive grain of salt.
Always.

They have some weird axes to grind.

The Internets indicate that she was 26-27 during the filming of TMNT.

The old blu-ray is likely an old telecine transfer with some DNR and sharpening.

The P+ stream could be representative the final 1080p version in respects to color and maybe some goofed HDR highlights tonemapped to SDR.

In regards to grain, maybe some of the lack thereof could be DNR or just a low bitrate stream.

A good example of when highlights are better retained.

OK, so I got her age wrong; I simply looked up the historical facts on a few other websites, and compared them to see which ones matched. Those I cited were quoted by Judith herself, in later interviews about the production.

The old Blu-ray uses the telecine that was prepared for the flipper disc from 1998.

It wouldn't surprise me if the P+ stream is a regrade of that telecine.

This movie was huge during my childhood. Saw it at least twice in the theaters, maybe even three or so. It was so surreal to see a live action film with a different tone than the animated series. They could have played it safe and still made a profit by doing a 90 minute animated movie more in line with the cartoon. But they took a gamble and it worked.
