Look, you've seen both in motion, so maybe that would change it for me. But I just don't see the similarity between this:

https://i.slow.pics/GDLvU73V.webp

and this:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/27/fear_and...D__blu-ray.jpg

in terms of how bad the compression is. One looks like a bad jpg!

Based solely on the screenshots (which I will again grant are not definitive) I would put Fear and Desire's 4K a notch or two ahead of the far superior Cheerleader BD in terms of compression.

The Beaver caps don’t do the encode justice. Have you already seen my comparison? https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...1&postcount=43.

Just looked at it, and they don't give me a different perception of it than the Beaver ones. I see the compression artifacts, yes, but the difference between how poor that is on Fear and Desire just isn't anywhere remotely close to how bad the Cheerleader images look.

I understand folks are focusing on the 4K disc here, but surely there's been a comparison or review of the BD discs, right?

Just thought I'd reach out in case.

PS: I know about the extra features.
The DVDBeaver review linked on the previous page is of the new KL BD.

Lot's of comments about other Kino releases, but not this one.

I looked at that when it was posted. At the time, it reviewed the 4K, and said the caps were from the BD, since they had a technical issue.

Perhaps they've updated the review, but it didn't compare the 2020 BD release to this 2025 BD. That comparison is what I think many would like to hear about before purchasing.

Thank you for responding.

This SHOULD look good, since I believe this was one of those rare Super 35 movies to get a 1.85 aspect ratio (Super 35 was usually used to crop down to 2.39). Malcolm X is another example of this and it looks great.

So… how does the new disk look? People here are saying the 4K looks like a bad encode. Right now the regular blu with the 4K restoration is half the price. Does the blu look better?

EDIT: Are there any screencaps comparing the 4K to the *new* blu?

People talking out of their ass about a product they haven't seen yet based on one persons opinion and three others discussing entirely different movies...

I'll refrain from commenting further in this thread. Apparently asking questions about PQ is absurd.

You're all good, I just get very annoyed by hyperbolic posts being made about certain discs before anyone can actually see what it looks like.

Okay… so…

How does the new blu-ray look? Does anyone here have that disk and have an opinion?

I think the new blu-ray looks fine. A little darker and more pronounced grain than the Paramount, but a nice filmic look. It is the more accurate 1:85 rather than the 1:78 of the earlier release but overall I'm very pleased with it. The extras are informative and finally do justice to a somewhat neglected film. It is one of the films you really have to pay attention to every word. No good for a casual watch - you have to really take the time to concentrate and your patience will be rewarded. Obviously not the classic that Chinatown is but a damn good try.

Well said! Big fan of Two Jakes and in fact this is one of my top wish-list titles. Thrilled to see it getting new extras in addition to the content ported over from the CE DVD. However, I'd argue Nicholson is just a tad too "oblique" in some of his filmmaking choices here. In fact when I revisited it via the Paramount BD a few years ago I found myself confused on a couple of key story points. (BTW when I first saw this on release I hadn't yet seen Chinatown. Needless to say it wasn't one of the most pleasurable moviegoing experiences of my life. ) Who knows, maybe this opinion'll change on a further rewatch. Copy should be here any day now.

Does the regular BD release not come with a slip? It's not pictured on the Kino store but it's listed in the description on this site. If the BD ends up being better than the 4K, and it has no slip, could probably wait for a sale later on.

Am I stupid, or did someone actually post caps of the 4K. Those DVDbeaver caps are just of the Blu-ray, is that what everyone is going off of comparison wise?

Yes, because nobody seems to have put up caps of the 4K yet. It still provides some ideas as to the quality of the new remaster.

Sorry, I was in the wrong thread. These were my observations about Lords of Discipline. But, from what I can tell, The Two Jakes Blu ray is also from the new 4K restoration.
