Look, you've seen both in motion, so maybe that would change it for me. But I just don't see the similarity between this:
https://i.slow.pics/GDLvU73V.webp and this: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/27/fear_and...D__blu-ray.jpg in terms of how bad the compression is. One looks like a bad jpg! Based solely on the screenshots (which I will again grant are not definitive) I would put Fear and Desire's 4K a notch or two ahead of the far superior Cheerleader BD in terms of compression. |

Lot's of comments about other Kino releases, but not this one.

Perhaps they've updated the review, but it didn't compare the 2020 BD release to this 2025 BD. That comparison is what I think many would like to hear about before purchasing. Thank you for responding. Last edited by strumdogg; 09-08-2025 at 11:35 PM. |

This SHOULD look good, since I believe this was one of those rare Super 35 movies to get a 1.85 aspect ratio (Super 35 was usually used to crop down to 2.39). Malcolm X is another example of this and it looks great.
So… how does the new disk look? People here are saying the 4K looks like a bad encode. Right now the regular blu with the 4K restoration is half the price. Does the blu look better? EDIT: Are there any screencaps comparing the 4K to the *new* blu? Last edited by Captain Keen; 09-06-2025 at 09:15 PM. |

Not to interrupt, as someone owning the OG Paramount BD, I'm wondering if this new BD from Kino is worth the $15.
I understand folks are focusing on the 4K disc here, but surely there's been a comparison or review of the BD discs, right? Just thought I'd reach out in case. PS: I know about the extra features. |

Okay… so…
How does the new blu-ray look? Does anyone here have that disk and have an opinion? |

I think the new blu-ray looks fine. A little darker and more pronounced grain than the Paramount, but a nice filmic look. It is the more accurate 1:85 rather than the 1:78 of the earlier release but overall I'm very pleased with it. The extras are informative and finally do justice to a somewhat neglected film. It is one of the films you really have to pay attention to every word. No good for a casual watch - you have to really take the time to concentrate and your patience will be rewarded. Obviously not the classic that Chinatown is but a damn good try.

Yes, because nobody seems to have put up caps of the 4K yet. It still provides some ideas as to the quality of the new remaster.
