Default LG to discontinue all UHD and Blu-ray players

"LG has discontinued all Blu-ray players, including the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players, with remaining units only available while stocks last.

The announcement echoes similar moves from Oppo in 2018 and Samsung in 2019, when both companies exited the optical disc player market.

LG has now officially discontinued its Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players, as reflected on LG's online portals and confirmed by multiple sources to FlatpanelsHD".

We have three now, but this is the only one that I have seen in the "blu-ray players" section. The other two are in the "4K Ultra HD player" section.

I had an open-box UBK90 for a couple years, had lots of problems with it. Just never worked 100% reliably. Went back to using my Xbox which has been fine.

Just as my region free modded LG player decided it no longer wants to read any discs. D’oh.

No big loss, got a UBK90 awhile back but just wasn't impressed with the picture quality, replaced it with the UB420 and haven't regretted it since.

Sony and Panasonic have not made new Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray players since 2019. Sony is even pushing the digital PS5 more than the PS5 with disk drive.

I don't expect them to release anything new again. I think these are the final models. Although I'm not sure what else they could add that would be meaningful.

So i asume that means also no LG blu ray writers anymore when the old stock is gone
Looks like the WEF plan " You'll own nothing and you'll be [un] happy ! '' is on track

Their writers aren't that good either. I have been using Pioneers for about the past 8 years and have been happy with them. Pioneers have been a little cheaper too.

That is the way I believe it is going. It is more of an incentive to build one's own private video library and to have some spare players mothballed.

Be seeing you.

THIS. News like this is depressing but the outcome was inevitable. It was bad enough when Samsung dropped out a couple years back. At this point, I've already mothballed a spare Oppo 203 and three spare Panny UBP-9000s (newest versions, all-region modded). And I won't be stopping there. Folks need to get ready in advance, or get burned. Are you the ant, or the grasshopper? I have 4,000+ blu rays of which at least 1200+ are uhds. I have zero intention of giving up on them for lack of functional players due to any failure on my part to plan for such an obvious eventuality.

I'm pretty confident that someone will be make a player. Even if it requires a kickstarter. There's money to be made. Just not enough money to be made for several manufacturers to keep making players.

I'm not really a disc fan. I'm a movie fan. I just want the movie in the best possible quality. If that means ripping all of my discs in 1:1 quality and I just play the file, that's what I'll need to do. I'd rather not do that but that does seem like it's going to be the safest option.

That's not how this works. Even if the money could be raised to successfully assemble a player that's not total junk, the AACS LA would probably not issue credentials. (Unlike the BDA, I know AACS LA is still around, as they just issued v82.) No credentials? No player, at least not without using whatever stolen credentials are being used by the various bits of backup software.
