Yep, the G5 has serious issues in HDR10:

https://www.avsforum.com/posts/63965642/

https://www.avsforum.com/posts/63965689/

Plus the new undefeatable always-on decontouring filter, undefeatable microcontrast 'enhancement' aka always-on per-pixel dynamic tone mapping, and undefeatable sharpening, which destroy fine details and the original creative intent with no choice for the user to turn them off to get an accurately faithful-to-source image:

Then there's issues that have just been carried over to the 2025 models from the G4/C4, like the diagonal dithering lines issue, which can result in grainy dither noise in some scenes even from further away where your eyes can't resolve the individual lines:

https://www.avsforum.com/threads/wol...hread.3307461/

And other issues:

https://www.avsforum.com/threads/lg-...-test.3302465/

https://www.avsforum.com/threads/lg-...-mode.3308343/

And if anyone says these issues have been solved/fixed, that is categorically false. The recent firmware update improved Dolby Vision, but there are serious HDR10 issues remaining, as clearly shown in the first two links I posted of a G5 that has already been updated with this firmware. Then there's all the other issues I posted, none of which have been fixed, and are unlikely to be, considering many of them have been carried over from the G4 which never got fixes.

Rtings now don't recommend the G5 to anyone due to the HDR10 issues:

The very latest firmware upgrade is version 33.10.95, which no one has tested yet.

I can also tell you that a proper calibration makes all HDR10, FHD/SDR, and all Dolby Vision HDR content perform beautifully in every picture quality attribute!

I'm impressed by the improvements from G4 to G5 in terms of brightness and so on, but reading about these issues makes me hope that they can at least get firmware updates out to solve them and if they can't then i hope they listen to all the feedback from enthusiasts and reviewers to eliminate whatever issues they can and improve others on the following model.

Not due to upgrade till around 2028/2029 myself but if they use RGB Tandem for 1 more gen on the 2026 models and then introduce MLA back into the mix, by the time 2028 models and beyond swing around that's going to be one helluva upgrade. For now, big picture viewing on my LG CX 65" is more than enjoyable.

Where in northern Los Angeles County would one find a provider of such a proper calibration? I wouldn't expect any major retailer, including Best Buy, to provide a competent service in this regard.

You can google ISF calibration for tv's and projectors in your area. There will be several capable people who can do it for you.

Also if you want, DeWayne Davis, aka D-Nice travels to all of CA. DeWayne is one of the top professional video calibrators.

Man - I could get the 83" delivered to my house for $4,805 all in, but this stand issue and the HDR issue both just make it a deal breaker. I guess we'll have to hope LG fixes the HDR10 problems via firmware and wait for the next sale (4th of July?). I'll likely custom build something so I dont have to use the aftermarket stand that sits too far back and looks horrendous. LG botched it, though I get they want you to mount on the wall. Still, they should go back to the stand design like that of the 83" C4. So much better.

What LG OLED should I get: G4 77" or G5 65"?

Being brighter is not a factor. Is G4 more premium cos it had MLA which was expensive to do so they dropped it to be cost-efficient?

Thank you

I know the G5 does not support any DTS sound. If I connect my blu ray player to the HDMI in on the soundbar and the HDMI out from the soundbar to the earc port on the TV and then set the TV to only use the soundbar for sound, will DTS play through the sound bar or will it not, since the TV does not support DTS?

ChatGPT says DTS has been fully removed from G5. On G4 it can only play DTS from eARC.

If you have a good viewing distance and can accommodate it, i would argue the 77" will give you a nice cinematic experience with the bigger screen in a light controlled room and because its a year old, the price is probably similar for the two models. I'd take the G4 right now because i think LG need to fix their HDR issues and they have removed some features and soon enough, they'll add MLA back to the 4 Stack panel and it will be even brighter and at that point feel like a worthwhile upgrade to you over the G4.

Nice. I see you have G4?

I have to decide whether I want a 65" or a 77" model. I can afford both easily.

Providing the soundbar supports DTS, it will work just fine

not all sound bars support dts....most don't. It's a shame LG dropped support for DTS on this tv. Add..don't subtract. Especially at this price point.

Apparently AV Forums got an advance on the upcoming firmware fix for the HDR issues and in Filmmaker mode they seem to be fixed but they said they were going to be doing a review of the 55" G5 and will test it a bit more in depth then because there's not perhaps a comprehensive test done and some questions remain whether it is crushing HDR10 shadow details to maybe try fix the prior issues.

That said, if LG can fix the HDR issue which is the biggest problem with the picture atm IMO and then also fix the issue of raised input lag at 165Hz for PC users, that's two main ar3as of problems addressed and the loss of DTS and other similar things is disappointing for sure, but hopefully consumer pressure leads to them returning next year on whatever model naming they go with. Think we won't see MLA return until the end 2027 models. They're probably going to push a further 4 stack RGB Tandem refinement for 1 more year before maybe battling for brightness again in 2027 and beyond.

I had a quick look and the last update was AV forums have got a retail 55" G5 and they will be looking to test that more thoroughly with the newest firmware from LG stating a fix towards the HDR issues has been made. Not sure when that might come out though but maybe we'll have it before the end of the month.

On a side note, i actually went on Rtings to use their comparison tool for my LG CX versus the G5 and there's a ridiculous gulf in the numbers. Like 2-3x more brightness almost across the board at times. Looking forwards to actually saving up and buying my next TV once they can sort out the HDR issues and 165hz input lag fluff up.

Also, i strongly have a gut feeling MLA makes a return on the 2027 models with a slightly better and refined Tandem RBG implementation for 2026 models. 2028 will probably not be a dramatic increase in performance brightness wise but a refinement on the 2027 models.

I'm looking forwards to see if i can maybe save a touch more, maybe wait till 2029 even and pick up a discounted down G8 if they keep the naming going that way. The only thing i was a touch surprised about was that because LG started using a more RGB type, they would compete equally with QD OLED but that still manages to have a bit of an edge. So i'm curious to see what LG cooks up over the next 3 years if they start facing even more competition from QD based MicroLEDs.

Rtings dropped a video addressing the HDR issues on both the G5 and C5 and what the firmware LG provided does fix and what it doesn't. Firstly the G5 benefits the most from what they tested but its restricted to Filmmaker Mode for the fixes which isn't a complete nightmare on the G5 for gamers because Rtings found a way to get the HDR issues resolved and keep input lag low by combining Filmmaker Mode and Game Optimiser mode. Unfortunately the C5 does not have that fix.

Personally i think it's helping move things in the right direction but this isn't a proper fix which LG should hopefully keep working on to release within the next few months and this is moreso a stop gap.

I think we can say now the LG G5 is basically the overall TV to beat for price to performance with this firmware but waiting a full year for all the fixes and buying on sale probably will get you a great bargain.

Personally i'm stoked to see where the hell things go for the next years models and after that till i upgrade around 2028/2029. I've also decided that even though the brightness will probably be touching 4x the amount of my current LG CX, i want to also go up to 77" and just absolutely double whammy my eyeballs with the upgrades. No way in hell i can fit anything bigger than that though in my room.
