Anybody ever order anything from Cinema Classics? I live in the US and was hell bent on ordering it for 35 dollars and not a penny more.

My copy got here today! I already switched the inner art to the original art.

Even though I wish this got the Caligari slip box treatment, I'm glad we have it in 4K period and hope that we'll keep getting more '30s and more silent films in 4K.

After watching the David Cairns video essay, I very much want to read the source novel Benighted, by J. B. Priestley, so I was delighted to find out that Penguin are set to re-publish it in October 2025, though there isn't a cover yet and sometimes these release dates shift:

The Penguin Horror covers are now up:

All five titles seem to have an RRP of £9.99, despite apparently ranging from approximately 176 pages to 336 pages. Benighted seems to be approximately 192 pages and none of the titles seem to have any supplements.

Viking will publish a new five-book series this Halloween, featuring literary horror writing of the 20th century.

The Penguin Horror series will include works by JB Priestley, Edith Wharton, Hilda Lewis, and Rosalind Ashe, as well as an anthology of classic horror stories by authors such as Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

The books will be published in paperback and e-book on 16th October.

Designed by junior designer Alisha Kruse and deputy art director Chris Bentham, the look of the series is inspired by the Penguin genre paperbacks of the 1960s and ’70s, as well as horror’s early roots in mythology, folklore and the Gothic.

"Penguin Horror is a celebration of all that goes bump in the night," said Edward Kirke, commissioning editor at Viking. "From headless horsemen and spectral handwriting to witches’ covens and families with dark secrets, the stories in this series are defined by their continued ability to profoundly frighten. These are books that have unnerved and terrified for generations, and I can’t wait to share them with readers today."

A bit strange, as I thought Viking was an American imprint. I'm not a huge fan of the slightly cartoonish artwork, but I do like the text fonts, the Penguin Horror logo and especially the vintage aesthetic they went for. I think The Witch and the Priest cover is potentially the most appealing (you never know for certain just from looking online), but Benighted looks pretty good itself.

The cost of the physical printing of a paperback book is usually a very minor percentage of the cost of acquiring, producing, distributing, and profiting on the book. It's pretty common that all books in a reprint series will have the same cover price.

Viking is owned by Penguin and and Viking Penguin editors acquire for Penguin Classics (at least in the US but maybe for all English language publications?) Penguin Random House has been wholly owned by the German conglomerate Bertelsmann since 2020 (and partly owned by them since 2013). Moving branding around a multi-national company isn't uncommon.

Just get this one (unless you're in AUS), no issues reported and it is a good package and the imprint will probably be twice as expensive with no benefit.
