The Blood on Satan's Claw

Another disc from the summer Severin sale. I was hoping they'd release a domestic 4KUHD upgrade this year, grew impatient and pulled the trigger when I saw they had copies of the out of print Blu available. One of the "Unholy Trinity" of folk horror movies. The only other time I'd seen this was on a terrible quality stream that looked like it was pulled from a DVD rip and compressed even further, this was a massive improvement to say the least. Great atmosphere, great soundtrack, some creepy moments. Lots of nice features from Severin (presently listening to included CD of the soundtrack).

I'm in the same boat as yourself. Seems like there's 1.5 to 2 hours worth of plot and ideas stretched into an 8 hour series. So much filler, weird dialogue, and unlikable characters. I'm sticking with it in the hopes that I'll get to see aliens wipe out all the annoying characters!

Certainly a low budget amateur affair compared to what we’d see after from Mike Flanagan but still an intense and emotional film. Was lucky to come across a great deal on this BD from Second Sight which was a big upgrade to what I’d seen previously streaming. Here’s to hoping we get Midnight Mass and even Gerald’s Game on disc at some point sooner than later.

September 3 - If you want a film that flips the slasher genre, I highly recommend The Final Girls, Freaky, or Vicious Fun over this.

From this boxset I watched our intrepid FBI agents Mulder and Scully iced in and isolated freezing their files off at a research centre in Alaska investigating a crater, murder, extraterrestrial organisms, dodgy scientists and a mad dog. Lots of anger and paranoia in this excellent episode.


Hmmm. Sounds familiar? …

09/04 - The Black Castle (1952)



A forbidding castle in the Black Forest holds dangers for Sir Ronald Burton (Richard Greene) when he is invited there for a hunt by the cruel Count von Bruno (Stephen McNally). Burton, searching for evidence that the count murdered his friends, becomes ensnared in a cat-and-mouse game that turns deadly when he falls in love with the count's wife, Elga (Paula Corday). Lovely Elga is being held prisoner by the count with the help of his hulking servant Gargon (Lon Chaney, Jr.). Only the castle physician, Dr. Meissen (Boris Karloff), may have the power to free the lovers, but his method could put them in even greater jeopardy.

An exquisite film with great ambience with it’s beautiful sets and furnishings, love the dungeons and the castle… “my cup of tea”!

09/04 - Night Monster (1942)



Dr. Lynn Harper, psychologist, has been called out to the old Ingston Mansion, in order to make an assessment of the sanity of Margaret Ingston. She claims to be sane, but she's clearly very disturbed. But then Dick Baldwin shows up on the scene, just when Dr. Lynne has been receiving thinly veiled threats from the inhabitants of the house. Three medical doctors have been invited out to the mansion as well; one by one the doctors are mysteriously murdered. Dick Baldwin must figure out who is doing the killings, and he must do so before whoever it is can kill his new love interest, Dr. Lynne Harper. But the only one he can trust is Kurt Ingston himself, since Ingston has no legs and can't have perpetrated these murders. And of course, Lynne might be wrong, Margaret may be very insane, and she might be the culprit...

Another fantastic film with the beautiful settings, furnishings and great storytelling… “my cup of tea”!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Universal sequelized Steven Spielberg's massive box office blockbuster, and if you haven't seen it in a while, you'll be surprised how well it holds up. Roy Scheider returns as police Chief Martin Brody, still left rattled by the events of the first movie and the first one to cry wolf when a series of disappearances in the waters around the island community of Amity leads him to belIeve another Great White Shark is cruising for some summer chow. The town selectmen (led by Murray Hamilton) scoff at the idea, thinking Brody's suffering from a form of PTSD, but as the body count continues to climb, Brody is forced to face his fears and tackle another fishy foe as his sons Michael and Shawn find themselves amongst a pack of imperiled teens left adrift on the wreckage of their sailboats to fend for themselves.

Jaws 2 was an early example of a hotly-anticipated sequel that suffered from severe growing pains, with original director John Hancock (Let's Scare Jessica To Death) let go from the production after a few weeks' filming (little of his footage made the final cut) and Jeannot Szwarc (Somewhere In Time) brought in to mop up and steer the film away from Hancock's original, darker vision (some of which you can ascertain from Hank Searls' novelization) and capture a more spirited tone more in line with the original. The core cast of teenagers are more "types" than fleshed-out characters, but they're far more appealing and likable than the hateful ciphers that would typify the slasher cinema that would originate just a few months after this film's release date with Halloween and its many inferior, crude sequels and ripoffs (those movies would rarely feature a moment as poignant as one girl giving a heartfelt plea for deliverance as the rest of the group look on in reverent silence). And Scheider, despite only doing the movie as part of a contractual obligation with Universal and who did not want to make it, nevertheless shows a great deal of professionalism by not half-assing it, delivering a more wounded take on Brody as he begins to crack under the pressure of a threat to the populace that only he can see (there's a warm, emotional moment as Brody, after shooting his gun off at the beach a what turns out to be simply a school of bluefish, gathers the shell casings scattered across the sand in quiet humiliation, as his younger son, Shawn, silently assists him).

While Szwarc shows a surprising tact with the smaller, human moments of the story, the audience clearly is craving the thrills of Spielberg's film, and he delivers on that level with terse efficiency, the shark setpieces delivering the creeping, anticipatory dread and slashing shocks with maximum expertise (the shark -- left scarred by an encounter with a exploding pleasure boat early in the film -- chowing down on a floating coast guard helicopter is a memorable setpiece). And returning composer John Williams is the true MVP here, retaining the unforgettable shark motif from the original and fashioning a more bright, youthful flair for the sailing sequences with the teen characters, with gorgeous, infectious melodies that bring the film to life. In a career full of franchise pictures, this remains one of Williams' best sequel efforts, with "End Title, End Cast" being one of the most beautiful cues in his vast repertoire. You could easily argue that this film is deeply "unnecessary", but as far as mercenary "Just for the money" sequels go, this is one the high end of such efforts, and two increasingly awful sequels that followed unfortunately sullied this movie's reputation as more of the same. Give it a shot, though, and you'll discover a superior shocker that's obviously not a patch on Spielberg's original, yet is still far better-crafted than it had to be.

Hell of a Summer - Camp slasher directed by and starring Finn and Billy Bryk. Pretty fun, but also ultimately pretty forgettable. There are some good comedy moments, the mask is pretty cool and there are a couple good kills, but I just watched it wo days ago and I don't remember much about it. Certainly not a bad effort for a pair of first time directors though.

The Romance of the Vampires - This is a vampire melodrama/mild horror film from Ricky Lau who did most of the great Mr. Vampire movies. This was certainly less fun than Lau's other work. There are 7 different sex scenes here and about 45 seconds of vampire action. Only a few brief scenes of people being drank, which is way too few for my tastes. Not a bad movie though, quite a sad story and even some genuinely touching scenes towards the end. Just way too many sex scenes here to bog things down.

Interestingly, I just watched Yvonne Yung Hung in A Chinese Torture Chamber Story on the 31st, and that was way more horrific than anything here.

The Conjuring: Last Rites - Or The Conjuring: Bring Your Daughter to Work Day. Bad joke aside, this one gets The Warren's now adult daughter Judy heavily involved in the ghost busting action. She was good though, I could see them trying to spin something off with her and the boyfriend character. This was a pretty fun entry, definitely a bit on the long side, but plenty of solid scares and mostly likeable characters. The Smurls might be the loudest family in movie history, still likeable to me though.

I wouldn't call any of them favorites, but I have enjoyed pretty much all of the Conjuringverse movies. So I'm probably not the one to ask is this was good or bad, I think they're all pretty good.
