So you guys are telling me you understand Microsoft has no option to continue making the HD-DVD addon as it was made by Toshiba, but you just wanted to hear it from microsoft themselves. LAME!

This link mentions the $49 price your talking about. I am glad this war is over and hopefully a BLU-RAY drive attachment will be a option for XBOX owners now.

Amen! I'd snap up a Blu-ray enabled Xbox 360 in a hot minute, if it was integrated.

What's funny is there's still an advertisement on the Xbox Live screen that talks about the HD DVD add-on "now only $129!" They'll need to change that... "Now only... um... uh... not anymore."

The war was over when Toshiba announced last week that they will not longer back HD DVD. Speaking of which I went to Best Buy today and they are no longer accepting any HD DVD titles for returns UNLESS you have a receipt. They will be discontinuing HD DVD as soon as all merchandise is gone. Not that this was a shock to anyone.

Default Microsoft drops HD DVD drive for XBOX 360

"In a official statement Microsoft announced that they will drop the HD DVD drive for XBOX 360.

This comes as no surprise after Toshiba discontinued its commitment to the format last week.

Statement:
As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own."

Microsoft Confirms HD DVD Price Cut To $49.99

Microsoft has confirmed that they are dropping the price of the external HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 from $129.99 to $49.99. This comes just two days after Microsoft confirmed that they would no longer produce the HD DVD player.

Bloomberg is reporting that a Microsoft spokesman has told them that the price point of the external HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 will drop to $49.99.

...and it's about time too, nobody is going to buy that piece of junk anymore.
I think there will be a lot of pressure on M$ to release a Blu-ray drive add-on, and one will be forthcoming by the end of the year.

Ya know, $50 ain't bad for 5 movies, even if they will be irrelevant in a few months (likely). If Transformers, Shrek the Third, or any of the Bourne films are part of that, it's no different than an expensive rental.

the five free hd dvds are similar in quality to the 5 free blu-rays, if you catch my drift.

it does come with king kong in the box, so you actually get 6 free movies. i'm not sure, but it might also come with a remote.

http://assets.xbox.com/en-US/hardwar...HDDVDOffer.pdf

ends 2/28/08

edit: and the hd rebate movies take a lot longer to receive than the blu ray ones, from my experience.

This announcement, and any announcements of companys dropping are useless since its a dead format. What are they gonna do, wait it out and hope Microsoft starts a mega movie industry?

They merged your thread with the original. I was saying you were going to get flamed, people around here hate when a duplicate thread is posted.
