Why in the world would you waste $1500-$6k on any TV when you can get a front projector and view it on such a huge screen?
Couldnt agree more.

I'm in college...it is amazingly portable as well...

Just put it in a box and project on my wall. Much easier than lugging a TV back and forth.

Posted this somewhere else.... but thought I'd share it here...

A friend from out of town is staying with us, and we watched Pan's Labyrinth last night....... on my 106" screen via my 720p/1080i projector.........

He told me they purchased a 50" 1080p plasma about 2 weeks ago.... and after seeing my setup, and knowing what I paid for screen/projector/mount etc.... he says he feels like he made a terrible decision, and he's going to try to return the T.V. when he gets back home

He also has a large "bonus room" above the garage, so he can't wait to create the same effect!

On a side note.... he asked me about the HDMI cable since I have a 25' one.... and he couldn't believe how cheap it was..... he was duped into an expensive Monster cable because of a Side-By-Side setup comparing HDMI cables at a local big-box store ....... I told him that they likely manipulated the pictures to make the Monster cable look better..... he said the non-Monster setup looked like Standard Def....... What a shady way to sell a more expensive cable..........

Totally agree on the Monster cable, My HT is a large "bonus room" above the garage too, and he is going to love it once he gets it all set up. Here the link to my set up here on BD.com.

Projectors are great to have and having a very large screen is great. The only reason I have this samsung DLP is that we wanted 1080p and 1080p projectors cost about $5000 (The Samsung we bought was $1700 and we had to price match with the JVC) at the time, but it is fine for now and has very accurate colors, considering my family is very low on money and my dad is unemployed (also the economy).

I do not have the money to buy anew projector now. Plus I'm looking forward and saving up towards the Epson Home Cinema 6500 UB or the JVC RSA-HD10, since those projectors do better with larger screen sizes (I do have a 165 inch (16:9) Dakane screen) The Panasonic looks good for my Bedroom though, but I doubt I will be able to have both.

Cool. i have a 107 inch Dalite Hi Power screen so i really don't have any problem with lumens. SO much that sometime it's actually overpowering even in Low Lamp

I highly recommend projectorreviews.com.
They do extremely detailed reviews of home theater projectors with an emphasis on 1080P ultra-high contrast models. Based on their reviews I bought an Epson 8500UB for the image quality, 4000hr at full-power bulb, and their superior warranty. Walmart sells home theater blackout curtains that will stop full daylight and the end result is amazing. Projectors in this class have scaling and noise correction circuitry that cost $2000 as a stand-alone box just a couple years ago. DVDs look amazing, but good Blu-Rays look astounding. At 6ft from a 106" image I can see no pixels, no blurriness, and little grain. "Real" theater doesn't compare. It's almost like looking out a wall-size window.

I will say making the room darker is worth it. Even with read-a-book lights it looks good, but the image just gets better and better with darkness till "Batcave" mode makes your jaw drop. I wound up with dark grey industrial carpet, flat black ceiling, and 50' of black velour curtians. It was totally worth it.

Welcome to the Forum ProjectBlu !

You are right with having the room as dark as you can get it .
I have achieved pitch black in my HT room & it makes A difference for sure .

Over the years I went from a Toshiba 43" Rear Projection to a Sony 60" RP and then a Pioneer Elite 63" RP.

Then good quality, low cost 1080p projectors became available. I have owned the Infocus IN82, the Epson 1080UB and now own the JVC RS10.

I finally closed the theater area in (see my gallery link below) and we LOVE it! The 120" screen is so clear and sharp... I could never go back to anything less for watching movies at home!

I think controlling light is no big deal and I use my front projector for broadcast TV and movies. Also with fixed thin mount screens, pull down screens, motorized screens, etc. there are so many ways to make it work. I do not see it cumbersome at all. Be a man, size matters

I think anyone considering say a TV that is $700 or more should consider a front projector and if you are going to spend say $1700-2K you have to be a momma's boy to buy a TV versus a front projector!

If I use my projector that much, I don't think I'd feel bad about replacing the bulb every three years!

Default LCD TVs vs. Plasma TVs vs. Projectors

Plasma and LCD TVs have finally hit their stride. Major electronics stores have all but phased out the old CRT televisions, relegating them to the unseen corners. Meanwhile, hordes of consumers are forced to make choices between two new technologies that they know little of.

Of course you have the helpful sales associates giving out their advice. But without background information they may be able to take you for a ride. They may sell you something not quite right for you, or may forget to mention possible alternatives if they don't carry them.

So, below we have created an LCD TV versus plasma comparison guide to help navigate the differences between the two technologies. We have also included a column for front projectors, which are an option frequently ignored by major electronics retailers.

Default Frame Creation !

Two other things that were not mentioned here is Frame Creation and of course 3D.

Panasonics PT AE 4000 has frame creation. It gets rid of the 24 fps. judder when the camera pans slowly across a given scene. It is very noticable when there are buildings in the movie.

I thought it worth mentioning since now I can't live with out it. Shop around, not all projectors deal with it in the same way.

The other thing is to wait a bit until the industry comes out with 3D projectors.

I would not trade my projector for the WORLD! My screen is 106" and is crystal clear! Everyone that has seen my theater in person says that they will be buying a projector next INSTEAD of a tv!! Projectors rock! You can see my pictures by clicking on my gallery if you're intrested.

Soap Opera Effect

The 24 fps. judder that you mentioned is actually for the most part intentional. Film and video makers turn to 24p for the "cine"-look even if their productions are not going to be transferred to film, simply because of the "look" of the frame rate from an artistic standpoint.

I am one of those who like the studder you speak of because it mimics the 24fps strobe of a traditional 35mm projector. In essence, 'frame creation' can take away the director's intended cinema-like strobing and to some, this is a big no-no.

If it's intensional I don't like it. I remember when I saw Fantastic Four in the theatre. There was one seen where the camera panned down a building where Reed Richards' laboratory was. When I saw this same scene on my Pearl it was way worse then in the theatre. The frame creation cleaned it up on my Panasonic 3000.

There are other examples too. One is in Ghost Rider where the camera pans over a grave yard. The whole scene is one juddery mess. It simply can't deal with all those vertical tomb stones. Frame creation to the rescue !!

I wondered in an AVR show room and they had a Sony LCD TV set up with a version of frame creation. I had them turn it on and I showed the guy the dramatic difference. I then pointed out the same scene on a high end Panasonic Plasma. The frame creation mode on the Sony made the other displays look so bad he switched it off.

It's one of those things that you never notice until some one points it out.

I love my projector !! I started of with a 42 inch 720p plasma and I never looked back.

+1. l'm the same with my new home theatre room. Picture quality is superb.
Been using it to catch up on 24 this week
We still have our 42" LG in the lounge but it is no comparison to our 1080p Sharp projector on a 100" screen.
