From a logical standpoint Medium Def is a more fitting term for 720. If my boss turned up at work tomorrow and dumped a 1280x720 monitor (yes, even under 42") on my desk and said "here is your new Hi Def monitor", I'd tell him to get ****ed, I wasn't using it.

Another factor, of course, is the storage issue. From the same reporter who wrote that we should wait on Blu-ray:

"Data contributes to ‘exploding digital universe’"

If most households' optical disc collection was on hard drives, the cost of that storage would be monstrous. But... we've come to this point in the conversation before too.

Yeah, I know. I was just thinking about my SD DVD collection. If I had it on volatile magnetic media I'd need at least 10 Terabytes - and I'd be responsible for managing it. I'd want it stored on a raid array. What sort of money would I need to just store that? And what effort? And how would I play it to my TV via HDMI? Can't even get HDMI with a home theatre PC at the moment as far as I know. So maybe via my PS3. Of course a PS3 can't access a NAS or a network drive on a file server, just a uPNP server or a USB mounted drive.

Way way way too much trouble. And in terms of a large Medium Def download, why bother.
