I don't want to beat a dead horse but I really don't understand the hate for this movie and the Ratner blame. I should preface that by stating that I never read the comics or saw the cartoon, but I thought the story was fine (I understand the haters don't because it messed with the storyline too much). As far as Ratner is concerned, people should be blaming the writers, not the director.

Just watched X3 on blu-ray for the first time last night. The picture and audio is amazing, far better than the other X-Men movies on bd. After giving it a second chance, I still have a strong hatred towards the movie(treatment of Cyclops and Rogue, no fiery Phoenix like the preview we saw at the end of X2 and the useless Angel subplot) but fans of the movie will definitely want to get blu-ray. There's still some scenes i enjoyed like the action on Jean's house, the Danger Room and Magneto lifting up the bridge with his powers but the negatives outweighs the good stuffs.
I've also recently watched Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class and I inform you that fans of X3(and X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will not be pleased. No doubt it was a really good movie but as a prequel, it breaks the continuity of both movies as if they do not exist( I won't discuss any spoilers here since they're all over the net) So now you're either a fan of "Group A" (X-Men Origins: Wolverine -> X-Men -> X2: X-Men United -> X3: The Last Stand) or "Group B"( X-Men: 1st Class -> X-Men -> X2: X-Men United) It's probably producer Bryan Singer's decision to retcon X3 and Vaughn himself criticized Ratner's direction by saying "I could have made something a hundred times better than the film that was eventually made. It sounds arrogant, but I could have done something with far more emotion and heart. I'm probably going to be told off for saying that, but I genuinely believe it." I was super stoked to see that First-Class pulled a "Sarah Connor Chronicles" and ignored the The Last Stand. I was never a huge fan of it, with the exception of Kelsey Grammer, who was perfectly cast as Beast.
The Last Stand Blu-Ray was fantastic (the re-release) from what I can remember. The GF and I are seeing First Class (my second time) and we are going to watch the last other three once we get back. |

The only good thing in the X-Men United Blu-ray is the previz sequences. They are all the work of Matthew Vaughn. And watching this crude animated previz, which all are executed in a superior way over the final movie, you come to understand that the problems of XM 3 do not really have anything to do with the writers, and everything to do with execution. Just watch the opening sequence, you'll see how much better it is.

The problem with X-MEN: THE LAST STAND is not how close and faithful it is to the comic books or how much it deviates from them. The problem is EVERYTHING. There's not a single thing in the movie that really works. The story is absurd and childish, it's completely devoid of any emotional resonance, and it is directed in the usual Rattner way, that is, clumsily pedestrian. |

I use to buy comics from 89-98 and was a huge xmen fan back then... while i thought X3 was definately the weakest of the trilogy (I didnt really care for how Phoenix/Juggernaut was handled) i still thought it was a fun shut your brain off at the door action movie. Its the same way i view Wolverine also.

Bought this disc for 15 bucks a few months ago and finally found some time to give it a watch on Saturday. For a 25GB disc from 2006, I gotta say it looks pretty damn good while the sound on it was pretty damn exceptional. Shame that the film still sucks. Out of all the X-Men films, this one is by far the worst for me in terms of what a tonal and narrative mess it is. When they tried doing the Phoenix saga again like they did last year with Dark Phoenix, at least it didn't feel as annoyingly cynical as this was.
Kelsey Grammer innocent, tho. His casting as Beast is one of the most ingenious things this series ever produced. Shame he was only in this + the cameo he had in DOFP. |

And I also agree that Dark Phoenix is a superior film. I think the issue with that film is some lackluster performances thanks to Hoult, Turner and Lawrence (the latter whom has proven she can be decent), and some very unpolished, obvious and unsubtle dialogue, most of it delivered by the two mentioned above. But I like the journey and find the film overall satisfying. |

Despite its many flaws, I've always loved this film for two reasons:
1. It actually presents a somewhat even-handed pro-and-con to the idea of getting cured from mutation, and shows why some might want such a cure and legitimately benefit from such a cure. Usually, these films frame the matter in such a way that anything other than full-throated celebration of mutation is contemptible. 2. I can't even begin to describe how satisfying it is to see Magneto, for once, get his comeuppance. Such a delicious irony to see him "reduced" to what he most despises -- a mere human. I am usually sympathetic to "villains" in Hollywood movies and as often as not prefer them to the heroes. Magneto is a rare case of a villain whom I've always unambiguously loathed and wished to see brought down, especially since the films tend to excuse if not covertly celebrate his flat-out genocidal tendencies. His loss of powers is perhaps my favourite scene in any Marvel-related movie. |
