My only concern with using my PS3 as my Blu player consistently is the fear of burning out the optical drive prematurely. Which has been happening too much lately

I'm really big on Blu-ray...so don't beat me up for what I am going to say.
Actually I can see that each of the six items are small points that I actually agree with. However on the whole the PS/3 for the price is a steal. Someday a nice quiet standalone for $200 would suit me fine. PS/3 for the kids and the standalone for me. |

I am not sure I understand the reaction to the article, it was not anti-Blu-ray or even anti-PS3, but made a few valid and some silly points that may mean the PS3 is not the right player for everybody.
I do wish my PS3 was quieter. And the lack of 5.1 analog outs really held me off from buying it for a long time. The universal remote issue can be overcome and I really couldn't care about what my processor displays (TrueHD). But there are many more pluses and it is the best overall value. |

a) your not watching movies out of fear ![]() b) you want a second unit just for movies If b) then it wouldn't be any different with a standalone burning out .. and they tend to be more expensive for fewer features than the 40GB PS3. So from that perspective a 40GB would be a better value if you want a second unit (and you could use it for LAN play on occasions) with the following exception.. The only significant point from the article is #4. And in fact we will be adding a standalone for that reason. Our current audio system is quite capable other than lacking HDMI. A few others are minor annoyances and the eco point is too funny. Very few people really give a crap about being "green" (despite their protestations) other than how it effects their pocket book .. which has nothing to do with being "green". |

Should everyone have rushed out and bought a PS3 because it's perfect? Of course not. There are plusses and minusses with every product, and with the PS3 I think the plusses probably outweigh the minusses more than anything else that plugs into the mains. I think the article just summarises what the minusses are, rather than blindly pretending that there aren't any. History will show that Sony made some difficult, but now vindicated, decisions when they made the PS3. Instead of stripping it to the core, they could have loaded it with additional functionality, and given people no cause to complain at all. But then the price would have been too high for it to be successful, and what a mistake that would have been. A brilliant, pragmatic, choice of compromises.
