My only concern with using my PS3 as my Blu player consistently is the fear of burning out the optical drive prematurely. Which has been happening too much lately

I'm really big on Blu-ray...so don't beat me up for what I am going to say.

Actually I can see that each of the six items are small points that I actually agree with.

However on the whole the PS/3 for the price is a steal.

Someday a nice quiet standalone for $200 would suit me fine. PS/3 for the kids and the standalone for me.

Pointless article. When you got nothing good to write about...

Do you feel the same about your suit, your car, your couch or your laptop? If they are not used, they are as good as expensive paperweights. Don't let things you own owning you.

HA, i should take a lesson from that statment. i do that with my tv, and receiver. sometimes i dont even turn them on, its like im afraid of them not lasting long if i use them alot ....it gets to a point were if im playing a game for more that 6 hours, i will turn off the receiver and tv for a wile so they can cool down im afraid of using my tv's hours up( how much do they have again?) so yea, my things definitely own me ( and i did just what i explained today)

I am not sure I understand the reaction to the article, it was not anti-Blu-ray or even anti-PS3, but made a few valid and some silly points that may mean the PS3 is not the right player for everybody.

I do wish my PS3 was quieter. And the lack of 5.1 analog outs really held me off from buying it for a long time. The universal remote issue can be overcome and I really couldn't care about what my processor displays (TrueHD).

But there are many more pluses and it is the best overall value.

So your saying either ...

a) your not watching movies out of fear instead of enjoying your purchase
b) you want a second unit just for movies

If b) then it wouldn't be any different with a standalone burning out .. and they tend to be more expensive for fewer features than the 40GB PS3.

So from that perspective a 40GB would be a better value if you want a second unit (and you could use it for LAN play on occasions) with the following exception..

The only significant point from the article is #4. And in fact we will be adding a standalone for that reason. Our current audio system is quite capable other than lacking HDMI.

A few others are minor annoyances and the eco point is too funny. Very few people really give a crap about being "green" (despite their protestations) other than how it effects their pocket book .. which has nothing to do with being "green".

Agree 100% .. compared to the crap that has been spewed over the last 2 years this actually has a few good points.

Thank goodness for a few voices of reason.

Should everyone have rushed out and bought a PS3 because it's perfect? Of course not. There are plusses and minusses with every product, and with the PS3 I think the plusses probably outweigh the minusses more than anything else that plugs into the mains.

I think the article just summarises what the minusses are, rather than blindly pretending that there aren't any. History will show that Sony made some difficult, but now vindicated, decisions when they made the PS3. Instead of stripping it to the core, they could have loaded it with additional functionality, and given people no cause to complain at all. But then the price would have been too high for it to be successful, and what a mistake that would have been.

A brilliant, pragmatic, choice of compromises.

There's actually a good reason besides aesthetics that you'd want the receiver to display the source codec: To be sure you're playing the lossless track. I distinctly remember one time a few years ago when I was about 30 minutes into the Braveheart DVD when I realized something was wrong with the sound. I looked at my receiver display and, sure enough, for some reason it was playing the stereo track. Ever since - and especially with Blu-ray - I always look at the receiver display when the movie starts to make sure I'm listening to the track I want. (This is mainly an issue with PCM/Dolby Digital titles that actually have an "exclusively lossy" track.) I know you could bring up an on-screen menu to verify which track you're listening to, but many people (myself included) value the convenience of instant feedback.

KingLeerUK: Good, non-fanboy post Not saying that the PS3 is a bad player, but definately not the best player for everyone. Excellent.
