Default Rumor? DVD death in December 2009...

So my neighbor, who knows nothing about Blu-Ray or that I am even a collector, mentioned off hand that he was watching CNN the other day and there was a report that movie studios whould stop putting anything new out on DVD in December 2009 and go Blu-Ray exclusively...

I have not seen or heard anything like this...anyone?

My guess is that is just a projection or something, which may seem valid.

It depends when demand for DVD gets too low, and the demand for Blu Ray gets high enough, that DVD distribution is no longer viable. December 2009 may just be forecasting that demand change.

I'm not so sure that the studios should stop producing DVD's that early. Many people haven't gotten BD players or even HDTV's yet. People shoudn't be forced on BD just yet. They have to wait until the price of both BD players and full HDTV's goes down. Then the people will decide, and decide good when purchising for BD.

Major CE's not producing DVD players anymore given the margins .. and only producing Blu-ray players at some point in 2009 is the only thing I've read that makes sense.

DVD will be viable for a long time to come. There will surely be smaller studios that will enjoy using DVD to get their movies out. Also, there will be plenty of people who only have DVD for some time to come.

Well I think Blu-ray is growing faster than we think maybe? I was watching the news today and they were talking about aliens and one of the newscasters said he just watched Signs on Blu-ray. I was like, "That's not even out yet, how'd he see it?" lol I think maybe DVD sales might drop drastically next year, but it won't come to a complete stop.

There's no way DVD will die that soon.

This makes much more sense to me as well. Stop producing only DVD players once Blu-ray gets to about $200. Enough old stock of DVD players to keep people happy for a while and Blu-ray players players your DVDs anyway. People then still have the option to buy DVDs if they want but may pick up a few Blu movies here and there as well.

Win win for all the companies involved. Bit of a loss for the consumer who might not be able to find that $20 DVD player anymore though - but still way better for them than not being able to find the cheaper movies.

2009 still seems too early to me though. 2011 maybe.

That would be a lot faster than I expected. VHS took forever to go away completely.

As awesome as this sounds, I'm taking it with a grain of salt. DVD format controls over 90%(tbhe last I heard) of home video sales. This will not last forever since Blu-Ray won the format war and consumers will no longer be confused. My guess would be 2015 is when the DVD format will die, but I could be wrong so don't quote me on that.

Pre-recorded movies on DVD will be available for at least several more years. DVDs are cheap to replicate. The materials used to create the Blu-ray version of a movie can be down-converted to anamorphic 480p for DVD release.
obviously they can use the same master, but everything else needs the same amount of work. ON the other hand I think we need to define what is meant. For me it is when major studios decide to stop releasing new major movies on DVD. Now if you can still get your wedding videos on DVD or some kid show or some titles that have been on the shelves for the last 5 years, that is a different story.

IN the end I think what you are missing is that DVDs are extremely easy to copy and so leaving DVD there is not good for the studios.

How much sense would it make for studios to stop producing something that generates $20 BILLION in revenue each year?
yup what an insane concept, that is why studios will never drop VHS after all
in 2000 (sorry could not find older data so that VHS would be closer to 20B) VHS was ~15 B why would ever give it up?
