Just FYI for any Carlin fans out there.

I just grabbed the new George Carlin Commemorative Collection Box Set for $52 at Best Buy. It's the same price Online as In-Store.

There were some elements of Carlin's routines that I liked, such as his honesty about the different failures we've gone through as people. And sometimes, I found myself agreeing with him about different satire subjects. But on the whole, I can't say he was one of my faves...mainly because of the language and his constant attacks against religion. I did own his CD at one point though, called "What Am I Doing In New Jersey?" - it made me laugh and smile more often than not.

I do wish they would do a reissue of Jammin’ in NY with both versions of the show. The version that MPI have been releasing is not the same show as the one on the original CD, VHS, and Double Feature DVD with Doin it Again. Yes the jokes are the same and they both were likely shot the same day if not probably a day apart but they’re not the same recording. Below is an example.

Original

MPI version

Dang, this seems like something worth getting, even if nearly all of it's just SD quality specials on DVDs.

I wish I still had my recording of "Complaints and Grievances". When I bought one of the dvd sets with some of the specials, I didn't bother to record my broadcast from VHS to DVD when I decided to get rid of all my tapes. I remember there being a few minutes missing before he goes into his final bit where he breaks down the 10 commandments.

It's absolutely worth getting, although I'll admit to being biased, since Carlin is my favorite stand-up comic.

Well, it IS worth getting as Carlin rates as one of the all-time greats.

As far as it being SD on DVD, at least you probably don't have to worry about a "better" version coming out some day, rendering your purchase obsolete.

How the f*ck did the George Carlin Commemorative Collection go from $50 to almost $90 on Marketplace.
Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago), it was still available from Amazon. Oh well, you snooze you lose. Might have to check Ebay for a better price.

It’s like Dogma on Blu-Ray. Why couldn’t a label re-release this title. I’m sure they would make a decent profit.

It was pretty high on Amazon when I was about to buy it a few months back... I called around to the Local Best Buys in SF and picked it up for $52.

$25 on eBay. Brand new, not a bootleg, and from a reputable retailer. This is easily the best DVD set (complete with one CD and one Blu-ray) I have ever purchased, especially at that price.

That's great! I've really enjoyed watching the evolution of George over the years (the DVDs look and sound good, too). I hope you enjoy this set as much as I have.

I'd be careful with that. I just bought the set on eBay a week ago, and the one I got was a bootleg (the obvious indicator was that the Blu-ray was a BD-R, and a single-layer BD-R as well). Not sure if I can say who the seller was, but it starts with 'dony'...

The box should be 1.5 inches thick exactly with plenty of white above and below the title on the spine of the box itself (same with the insert in the plastic case).
The printing on the box and the booklet isn't as clear on the bootleg (they obviously scanned one to make the bootleg), but it's hard to tell without a side-by-side comparison. See the pics below, also note the size (thickness) of the red letters.

The official one should also have a round sticker on the shrink wrap explaining that it's a 10-disc set, etc...

I bought it again from Amazon (make sure it's 'shipped AND sold by Amazon', not sold by another retailer), and got the official, made by MPI set with a replicated, dual-layer Blu-ray.

Otherwise, it's a very convincing bootleg set- booklet, poster, everything. If the Blu-ray wasn't a BD-R I probably wouldn't have looked into it further...

It's been well over a year since I bought the set, and it isn't a bootleg. Thanks, though.

Haha, totally spaced on the year there...
Yeah, I suspect the bootlegs started popping up in the last year or so, but just wanted to post the info for others that might be interested in getting the set. I think eBay is getting kind of flooded with bootlegs now.

After watching the documentary on Carlin, I had to get this, and didn't think a bootleg would be so elaborately created...

That two-part documentary was phenomenal. Some of it, I knew; some of it was new to me. The last 30 minutes or so were gut-wrenching.

Although I certainly don't recommend bootleg or counterfeit DVDs/Blu-rays, there are a few titles that are in copyright Hell and have never been officially released. I've come across releases of some of these titles, and it is amazing how well they are packaged. I also unknowingly bought a counterfeit Blu-ray for my wife a few years ago; other than the data side of the disc being purple, everything about the disc and the artwork looked authentic. When I brought it to the attention of the seller, a full refund was given and they disappeared from eBay.

What's that old saying? "If it seems to good to be true..."
