Critics routinely make bad calls. THE SHINING (considered a classic now) was nominated for several razzie awards (including Stanley Kubrick for worst director...which is utterly ridiculous) because the reviews were so bad. A couple of years on, and those same critics suddenly realised it was a great film after all, and started backtracking like crazy. But the initial reviews sucked.
I can think of so many cases where critics blew it, that I often don't take them at face value (unless it's a film directed by Michael Bay or Uwe Boll.lol). They did the same thing with another Denzel film, MAN ON FIRE (which has a measly 39% on RT), which I thought was an outstanding film, as did many others (and it seems to have a strong following till this day). I suspected that mixing christian themes with Mad Max stye action-violence probably wouldn't go down well with most critics (though weirdly enough, America's best known critic, Roger Ebert seems to love ELI). My feeling is that BOOK OF ELI is probably really well acted, well directed and a good time at the movies....but that critics don't like Christinanity being used to lend gravitas and seriousness to what they percieve to be merely a Hollywood action film. A lot of the reviews seem really pissed off about the theology angle being included at all. If the film was just a straightforward action romp (with no biblical message), reviews would probably be less harsh. If you want your film to have a theological "message", you'd better be aiming it at the Oscar crowd, not the Sci-Fi action nerd crowd. Several critics also seem to have a problem with the "graphic novel/comic book" styling/framing of the film employed by the Hughes Brothers. But that sounnds like something many fans might actually appreciate. Of course it could just be a bad film in the conventional sense. But I'm willing to take the chance to find out for myself, with the talent involved. But I think a lot of the strongest films of some actors, recieved poor reviews initially. Al Pacino and SCARFACE is another one. Considered a classic today, it offended the sensibilities of many critics at time and was deemed "trash" (it also got a Razzie nomination for worst director for Brian DePalma). But audiences decided it was a good movie, and years later, those same critics who mauled it, started backtracking and declaring it an essential 80's classic. You never know...in 10 years time, these same critics might be calling BOOK OF ELI a "sci-fi classic"....especially if audiences actually turn out to love the film. I am definitely going to see this. Man on Fire got a 39% at Rotten Tomatoes and that is one of my favorite movies.

I never understood why anyone in the general public would care what critics say. And most likely they probably don't.
To for instance: Transformers. A lot of people love that movie. I wanted to love it, but when the first 20 minutes of the movie are about some teenage kid's hard-on for a model? FAIL. And I freakin bought that for my 2.5 year old son. [insert smiley whacking himself in the face with a bat] |

I just saw this. Its a yawnfest. The movie trods along at a snail's pace, and is tedious to the point of agony.
