Now the fun begins...picking out my, Projector, Receiver &
Speakers.

Overall the complete build of my basement has been great. I hired out 2 portions of the build, the tape & texture and the carpet install. Completion time was about 14 months working on and off on weekends, with a few children born during that time

Looking forward to getting my components now and updating my HT Gallery section!

I just found this thread and I am very impressed. Fantastic job. Nice finish work, especially the in-wall hookups. My HT is 10 years old now and I'm thinking of upgrading to a projector/screen set up and you've given me a lot of good ideas. Thanks for the thread.

Thanks! I need to update my pictures, it's been a long process getting everything in place for the basement...but for every $1 I spent I gained 2 in home value

I hope to get my projector this fall, when the new models go on sale, I'll probably pickup a last year one. Right now, babies are keeping me busy

My budget for finishing it was about 12k, and I spent about 15-16k. And that is without the equipment. Most of the equipment you see in the photos is my older setup, my receiver is just getting optical sound right now, but it does have DTS.

I am leaning towards the Epson Home projector (1080p). I have read about them for some time now and feel that their price, flexiblity, and performance match my needs. I'm a family man, and this isn't a dedicated space, but we hope to turn it into something fun and comfortable.

Thanks for looking in!

Not much has happened since I installed my surround speakers - well to the basement that is. I did pickup 2 4x8 sheets of 3/4" oak plywood to start on my media cabinet. Only problem is, I still have to design it. So I'm getting up early tomorrow to draw it out, get out the tablesaw and start having fun again.

Can't wait to get rid of my table!

Thanks! The goal is to have the theater up and running before the holidays at the earliest and before the superbowl at the latest.

This weekend, I was sorta productive. I did spend all day saturday in the garage working. Part of it was just cleaning out the garage to get ready to work. I did manage to get the "shell" of the cabinet built. So I got the top/bottom of the cabinet cut out, both sides, and both in between support sides.

When I designed it on saturday morning, I started out at 5' max, but increased that to 6'. One, because it would allow another column of components, and 2 it was a better use of the 4x8 sheets I bought. It's 20" deep, approx 24" tall and 60" long with 3 open sections.

The left section will have 2 adjustable shelves, to hold 3 components at a space of 22.5" wide.

The middle section will have 1 (possibly 2) adjustable shelves, to hold the amp on the bottom and the DVR / DVD player on the top shelf.

The right section will mirror the left.

In total, I'll have 8 spots (possibly 9 if I decide to go with 3 spaces in the middle). I plan to leave the amp space about 14" tall, just to have enough room for ventilation.

I'll post some pics this week as well. It looks pretty good, I decided on a red oak plywood, which is only $40 a sheet.

Next step is to get the backing, which won't be 3/4" like the cabinet, it'll probably be 3/8 or 1/2.

The best part about this weekend was I got to use my new circular saw (Milwaukee). Love it.

Yesterday after work I did manage to find some backing for my cabinet. I went with 1/4" oak plywood. It seems flimsy, but I'm only building a 20" x 72" backing and it'll be nailed every 24". Also picked up the trim for the front, 1/2" x 2", good quality trim that will give it the facelift it'll need.

Today, I'm going to cut out the backing, attach it to the cabinet and cut out the holes for the wires in the back.

Still no luck on finding furniture or cabinet feet. I may have to order from Rockler.

Default Home theater cabinet update!

Well, I finally got the trim on the front and I've got the shelf pieces cut. I still need to finish sanding the entire thing, stain it, screw in the adjustable shelving channels and put the casters on the bottom.

Here are a few pics of it. Total it's 6 ft long.

Thanks! I do have a few spots I need to sand and fill, but overall I'm pleased. As long as it's good enough for the person who it's for right? Oh, and I still need to drill holes for the wires...

I'm going with 3 component spaces on the left and 3 on the right. In the middle there will be the center channel on top and the amp on the bottom.

I'm impressed. I doubt I could build something that looks that good without a lot of trial/error. I just don't have the patience for that kind've stuff. I'm contemplating building something like that for under my projector screen but I just might go with something from Ikea/elsewhere.

It takes some time. The main reason I started it b/c I am just too picky and couldn't really find anything I liked. I've seen the ikea stuff, looks good, but I haven't looked in depth at it, but from what I've seen from others pics they are nice.

So far, the total is about $165 in cost of materials. I'm not sure how much it would cost if I had just bought a large adjustable cabinet. The biggest driver for me building it is I didn't want particle board, I wanted a low height, long cabinet, with 8 spaces.
