Before it's BD release I thought I Robot looked pretty good upscaled.

I totally agree wit hthe miyazaki statment

I'm wishing that someday they come out with princess monoke, that would be SWEET.

Haha, unfortunately right after I sold my friend my old HDTV, that was the first DVD he put in. It's non-anamorphic, so it looks absolutely dreadful on a 16x9 television, so we had to zoom in to get it to fit to the screen, etc. At first he was like WTF did you just pawn on to me, but I showed him some actual high def stuff on it and and all was well.

I just recently watched Prison Break: Season 2 because it's only on DVD and I didn't want to watch just Seasons 1 and 3. Looked decent enough.

The Lord of the Rings movies look the best to me. Can't wait for them in Blu.

Some people gave their HDTV's screen size which I think is good to know when reading their comments about how upscaled DVDs look. My LCD HDTV is 47" which is probably in middle size range but it's still large enough to show a lot of artifacts and grain in DVDs upscaled to 1080p. Another thing to consider is what people use for their sharpness setting. I bet people with large screens set it to 0 or close to it. I do on my 47" LCD HDTV, otherwise the upscaling defects, artifacts, grain, etc. look terrible. With BDs I can usually not always get away with setting it at 2 or sometimes 3 (less than 50% max setting) before I start to see artifacts like edge enhancement. Still upscaled DVDs nearly always look better than SD TV programs upscaled to 1080p on a 47" screen. I can hardly watch SD broadcast any more. Good thing I have Sci-Fi HD channel.

You need to remember that it depends on your HDTV as well. Bigger screens will make the DVD look like garbage compared to smaller ones.

Yes, that is true. As an example, try watching the DVD of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" on a set larger than 50". The grain and overall quality is atrocious. I hope they process that and similar films with the Lowry restoration process before they release them on blu-ray.

Just wanted to weigh in on this topic and mention how impressed I was with "Get Smart," which I watched last night on SD-DVD. Probably the first movie that I could *almost* say I would have a hard time guessing if it was SD or Hi-Def.

LOTR also looks very good upscaled.

My TV is a 42" 1080p LCD.

Details beyond that timetable are vague at this point, including whether systems will be announced with the new drive that month, pre-announced in January for a later release, or simply be added to manufacturing for an announcement later in the first quarter. Also unknown is whether the new drive will rely on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for out-of-the box support, or whether an update adding support for the drive will be released for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

The last time i recall watching a standard dvd was right before Pirates of the Caribbean 3 came out in theaters. My friends and I watched the first two beforehand to remember everything that was going on so we didn't get lost during the third one at any point and the first one looked pretty bad. They left before we started the second one to go get some food and they got back just as i was going to the bathroom and loaded the video. As we began watching POTC 2, i swear it was in HD because it was such a huge improvement over the first one. I had to stop the movie and eject it from the tray just to make sure it wasn't.

Long story short:
Pirates of the Caribbean 1: Looks like poo
Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Looks really good
Never bought #3 on SD since i bought trilogy on blu when it released.

Out of ALL the DVD's I own (which is a lot more than my small but growing Blu-ray collection) the ones that look great on DVD are LION KING and CHICAGO. LION KING is VIBRANT TO THE MAX which is beautiful! and CHICAGO has enough grain that it's quite detailed for a standard DVD. Notice that both of these are 1.85:1 framed DVDs and look better because they fill up the whole screen. 2.35:1 framed DVDs I have throuble with because the black bars on the top and bottom can look too bright (at least on my TV).

For blu, I rarely have no trouble with 1.85.1 framed Blu rays. But I have to look out for 2.35.1 framed Blu rays because if the black bars arent BLACK, (like in "I Am Legend", which is to be honest, not as good as a transfer as everyone says it is, faded colors, soft focus and bad CGI) it's very distracting.

Star Wars episodes 4-6, digitally remastered are plain awesome!! From the added Tatooine scenes in Ep.4, to the opening battle on Hoth in Ep.5, to the battle on endor in Ep.6, these remasters are a sight upscaled on my PS3. I just can't wait to see what a Blu transfer will look like w/lossless audio inplace of the Dolby EX 5.1 track.

BUT, the film I find to be the biggest upscaled improvement is Armageddon The Criterion Collection. The digital transfer upscaled via PS3 is a huge upgrade to the SD single disc out there. But yet it is another film that will be much improved w/a BD transfer and lossless audio track. This is my #2 film I can't wait to have. #1 comes out in 2010 from the Walt Disney Co., that being Beauty & The Beast.

Default Elvis any one?

During the summer of 2007 a whole bunch of the Elvis DVDs were reissued.

I have "Girl Happy" (issued 2007) and it looks fantastic on a 58 inch plasma using a PS/3.

I had "Kissing Cousins" (issued 2007) out from the library - also looked fantastic.

On the other hand a 1990-ish DVD of "Viva Las Vegas" looked dreadful on this set. I was so happy that the Blu-ray of "Viva Las Vegas" came out.

For me at least it was Orange County. Right before I watched that I watched Shallow Hal which looked really bad, but then I watched Orange County and the quality was good. Movie was crap, but good quality.

I second that. When I watched the Star Wars DVD's on my PS3 they looked way better than they did on the reg DVD player. I still want em on Blu but this will hold me over till then. I'll have to pop in my Criterion Armaggeddon.
