Indeed, Into the Wild is a movie about chasing and living your own dreams, and confidently standing by your own viewpoint, even amid opposition. Yes, Chris did not prepare for what lay ahead for him in Alaska (he did not prepare for just about all of his travels), but it is at the end of the movie where he realizes the one thing he did not give any thought to - that living your dream life can be exponentially less meaningful if you are doing it all alone. For Chris, this was the case. His contact with very different people is what carried him along throughout his journey. He did not realize that until the very end.

If you recall, Chris envisioned running into his father's open arms. No matter what went on in his life as a child (which definitely helped to mold his outlook), there was, in his vision, a great deal of hope from both he and his father. But, as is the case in situations like these, it was too late.

I own the BD and I admit that it will be watched over again only moderately at best. I'm glad to own it, as it came on the heels of some recommendation by others as a film they knew I, in particular, would like. They were right. The movie does resonate very well with me.

I just got back from living in Vancouver, WA and would go to Cannon Beach to sit for a hours. And I miss it. There is a huge scene of them sitting where I would sit and almost made me cry since I am in Minnesota now. I was watching Twilight last night and the same beach. Makes me homesick for Oregon.

The films that I know have been filmed at Cannon Beach that almost make me cry because I miss it.

Into the Wild
1941
The Goonies
Twilight
Point Break

Yeah that's certainly part of it, but it's not everything. Going on that journey and living your dream is just as important as the ending.

Let me make one thing clear to those who think it is depressing. The MOST drepressing thing to me was not that he met his untimely demise at the end. We should all be so lucky to do EXACTLY what we want to do before we go, but the most depressing thing was that he felt like his family wouldn't necessarily understand and that he needed to break away from that.

Then it goes to back to the influence he had from Romantic period in literature. Are we as a society so dependant on materialism and money rather than experiencing the world around us? I think Chris understand the answer to that more than most people, and he would argue yes.

I think it's very evident even on here. How many people have experienced some of the sights and sounds found in Planet Earth? I'm willing most haven't.

Some people are just born with the desire to see and travel the world. The beauty of the film is that we have to find that balance between embracing our dreams and living out our dreams and remaining close to the people we care about. It's something I know that I personally struggle with on occasion.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no price to high for this film. This is one of the finest films I've ever seen, and if you can find it for 20 dollars or less then pick it up with no questions asked. I absolutely loved this film and would pay top dollar for it if I didn't have it. Very underrated film and should have got more attention in the awards category.

Yeah, it was a decent film about mental illness + it was beautifully shot.

If that's what you got from it, then you missed the whole point of the film, actually the true story.

Hmmm, i'm not so sure the main character was mentally ill. I think at some point we've all been mixed up kids, but maybe we just didn't act on all our impulses in the extreme manner the way he did.

He wasn't mentally ill. You don't get into Emory being mentally ill. He just refused to accept to that to be happy in society you have to chase money and rely on consumerism. He sought to live a life and to be happy in nature the way the romantics did. Just because you refuse to accept what others tell you is the way you should live doesn't mean your mentally ill regardless of what society tells you.

Are you trying to be difficult? Are you trying to say that an Emory education is bad? Emory is an Ivy League school and one of the top ones in the world. The fact that you pick that out from what I just wrote doesn't make sense to me. If you want to ignore that, that's fine, but Emory is a great school.

For that matter, what is common sense? If common sense tells you to not chase your dreams, then by all means I don't want your version of common sense. But, mine tells me to chase mine, but to do so with a plan and to be smart about it.

Wow that one guy just killed this thread haha.

Yes, this item is for preorder. I believe if you wait a little while you can probably get free shipping to store (i guess its too early to get free shipping) but dont wait too long because the deal may go away (has happened to me before).

Also if you are looking for other rebate movies, Old School Unrated and Truman show are $14.86 each (meaning your paying $4.86 for each). Pretty good deal personally.

BTW ckent22, i like your movie list.

Indeed...lots of fodder in here.

MODS, can you help clean up this thread a little (including this post)?

No I am not trying to be difficult, nor am I knocking Emory... I apologize if you took what I wrote so personally.

Some might call that common sense?

Any who, I stand by my original response it was a well shot film about imho a young man with a illness of the mind.

Well, if that's your take on it, then by all means you can consider it an illness. I don't, and I don't think Sean Penn or most viewers would think that either.

I do think you missed a lot of the points of the film though and the messages it was conveying.

Did Chris make mistakes? Yes. Was he mentally ill? No.
