Got it working! At least it is downloading as I speak. Found a post on another forum for the 4308 that mentions powering off completely (small power button), then hold in cursor up and down and then power on again. Wait for flashing on LCD display then release the cursor keys. Looks the same as the hard reset but this time after power cycling once again, it tried to contact a different server and found the update.

If interested, I managed to capture this much as to whom it contacted:

134.214.100.6 port 123 (time server)

172.16.51.1 port 2170 (still do not know what this is)

202.218.213.57 port 443 (SSL to download firmware)

my DNS server

140 minutes to go. Will post again later when done.

Awesome man! Glad you figured it out. Expensive S*** is so much more enjoyable when it works properly! Lol.

Had to leave, was taking too long. Just got back and all appears okay now. I can even see my 5308's MAC Address on the network info screen, something that was hidden before. I can do firmware check and it tells me I am all up to date. Not sure what happened the unit for it to act like it did, buggy firmware I guess. All is good now, I just need to reset all the settings back to where they should be. I never used the backup util to save settings as I was not sure if my problem would also affect that too. Played it safe and will manually enter in all settings again and do another Ad Eq later on.

I just bought a Denon 590 from Best Buy yesterday. It was opened box in perfect condition. The salesman, a very nice guy who I trust and had bought speakers from before, told me he knew the guy that bought it and the guy didn't know what he wanted and the Denon was too much for him. So I picked it up at a discount ($300), which seems incredible given all of the features. But I suppose it's a pretty new receiver and I can't find anything about it. I hooked it all up last night, played a few BD's, and the sound was incredible. Finally, DTS-HDMA! Fiddled around with the settings and what not. Seemed to get most of it right. In my experience, the microphone adjustment doesn't really work, but I take it that's a little different with the Audyssey system? Is there anything I should know about this receiver? Denon seems pretty reliable. Thanks in advance.

Kryptonic, Make sure you have a quiet room when running Audyssey. Also make sure to engage Dynamic EQ. You may have to run the test a couple of times to get it right. go here for more instructions:

Thanks for the link blujacket.

I didn't come across much when searching as far as reviews, either professional or consumer, went.

So using Audyssey is prefered with the Denon's? I was listening through Direct, but it sounded kind of tinny. Running audio through Audyssey seems to be the only real way to get decent sound. I ran the test, but it seemed to mismatch a lot of things, setting the crossover for four of my speakers to 120hz, even though two of them are 60hz and my two surrounds are 80hz. And it set the crossover for my center to 40hz, even though it again extends to 60hz. I set it back to 80hz for all of them and it sounded better. And it also threw off the channel levels, setting them too low for my taste, around -6db for my fronts, so I ended up bumping those back up. The distance seems fine.

I would think that simply running Direct would provide a kind of automatic decoding without any other external nonsense, but I guess that's not possible here? It seemed to sound better last night for some reason.

I have a quick question - I have the crossover on my subwoofer set to around 90-100hz. What should it be set at if I set the crossover in the receiver to 80hz?

as a generaly the subby should be set at 80hz but it may vary due to your room environment

I did a little reading and decided to set the crossover on the sub all the way up to 200hz and turn the volume down to about half. Seems to blend nicely with the other speakers with the crossover in the receiver set to 80hz. Ran Audyssey again with slightly better results. Sounds great. The unit also stays pretty cool, even enclosed in an entertainment center.

Default Question for 1909 owners

I have had this for awhile now and been very happy. I just got a new tv Sharp 52E77UN and Blu Ray Player Maganavox something. It was on sale at Wal-Mart. So I have Blu Ray hooked to the Denon and then from Denon to TV. I watched a Blu Ray and the HD Audio light came on and the picuture was very good. I put on a different Blu Ray and the light did not come on and the picture was grainy in the background. I played with all kinds of settings on th Denon and the light wont come back on. Could that be the Blu Ray or is that in the Denon. I had my head in my a@$ and never checked to see if the light came on with the first Blu Ray. I know stupid. Thanks for any help

Give a list of the Blu-ray movies you are using. Tell which had the blue light and which did not.

I was watching The Day the Earth Stood Still. The light came on for that one. The other was a Nicolus Cage movie he in tokyo or something like that. He is a hitman. Movie was not good. Plus the grainyness was driving me crazy. I appreciate you getting back to me. I have only watched two. Just got everthing hooked up Saturday.

Both movies you are talking about has DTS-HD Master Audio. This may be a setting in your Blu-ray player. Sometimes and not that many, I have had to make sure my blu-ray player is playing the HD audio.

You may have to select the HD audio in the blu-ray player. An example for me is 'BARAKA', I know for sure each and everytime I put that movie in, I have to go and select DTS-HD Master Audio or it will just play Dolby Digital(no blu light).

I don't know anything about your blu-ray player and honestly I'm not very good with this Denon. Denon menu and settings are really wierd to me, but it sounds good.

I have the Magnavox player as well. If the HD light came on during Day the Earth Stood Still and displayed DTS-HD MA, then you're fine. Bangkok Dangerous has a DTS-HD MA track as well, but you may have to select it in the discs menu. The film is probably pretty grainy intentionally.

I have a quick question - what tone controls does using Direct bypass? It mentions this in the manual, but is not entirely clear. Could you clarify please? Thanks. I think I prefer this mode when watching DVD's and BD's. It seems to have the cleanest sound with more clarity than using Audyssey.

Thanks Hamp,
I have that and it has helped. Just haven't been home much lately, busy time time at work during the summer. Hopefully I will be home in a week or so I can play with the settings. Plus I have spent some cash lately and I want to enjoy it. Also would like to clean up some wires and post some pics. My system is pretty simple byt coming together well. Upgrade a couple more speakers and I will be happy.

Turn off the crossover in the sub or set it as high as possible. The receiver will reroute frequencies below its crossover to the sub and you want the sub to play whatever audio the AVR sends it.
