I agree. If any movie will get my mom to go Blu, this one will. It's too bad that we're still waiting for Oz on Blu, though. This should have been one of the movies ready to go when Blu was looking like it was going to be the format war winner last year. Hopefully it's not a case of too little, too late. It probably won't be, though.

I personally don't love the movie or anything, but I'll own it "just because" of its legendary-ness. Plus, if they restore the color scenes to something that looks good on my HDTV, then I'd be totally down. I could imagine some of those Munchkin City scenes looking pretty awesome on Blu (think Speed Racer).

I think it should come in a special emerald green case - rather than the traditional blue case

Now that is a great idea! A shimmering green case would be awesome.

They should do that with Ghostbusters, too. Well not emerald, but green (for Slimer).

Grew up watching it on a black and white TV. Then when I was 12 I saw it in the theater and there was the color explosion when landing in OZ.

Then the flying monkeys on a big screen. Awesome.

I got you both beat . I have a VHS and two DVDs (the old one and three disc one) and I'm still planning on getting this puppy. My mom's gonna flip, but she doesn't understand (she never came downstairs to watch one yet).

Being one of greatest musicals ever made, the BD release will certainly be at home in my BD collection.

The 60th Anniversary DVD release was in 5.1 surround. Hopefully the 70th Anniversary Blu-ray release will have a lossless 5.1 audio soundtrack. Yet again, we are behind the 8-ball (Warner Bros.) on that prospect.

The blu banner on the top of the package says "Hi-Def Sound" so we there's a good chance we'll get a lossless audio option. Granted, the bottom of the picture says "Subject to Change", so your fears maybe well founded. If this gets released without a loseless option, I'll be furious.

I own 6 versions of The Wizard of Oz:
  1. Original laserdisc release
  2. Re-mastered laserdisc release
  3. Ultimate Oz laserdisc box set with original script, etc.
  4. Original DVD release
  5. DVD release with many extras
  6. 3 disc collector's edition DVD

I'm definitely buying the Blu-ray.

^ Crazy Oz collection!

-------

Out of curiosity, how good is the audio for this going to sound, considering the original recording is 70 years old? Was "stereo" even around back then? I know surround wasn't, so I'm curious how and what they're going to do.

If they have all the sounds individually recorded in the archives - which are usually mono anyway, then they could do whatever they want, a stereo mix, 5.1, 7.1. Of course if they did that, the panning of the foley and background vocal sounds, and remixing of the ADR and music will not be the original work. To be anything like the new Sleeping Beauty release, they would have to have all that, and do that much work to it.

Sweet. I'd love to see how they do that, and how they choose to mix certain scenes. There are a lot of scenes in that movie that would do well with some quality audio.

So many things they could do really. They could pan each "follow the yellow brick road" voice, so that it sounds like it's coming from all around, I can't remember all the sound effects, but the dog barking, they could pan the sounds of the tornado scene. The vocals will never sound as good as a modern recording so I imagine they will try cleaning it up, removing the noise and adjusting the equalizer settings, but they could still do the surround effects if they have the raw audio tapes. They wouldn't have envisioned what today's engineers could do to it, so they may have not seen the need to keep the raw clips. I hope they have what they need to remix the audio. If all they have is the 2 channel master, then there will not be much they can do to it. Being a musical, we just might be in luck.
