So far the titles I've seen have been a nice upgrade in the PQ department. Seed of Chucky actually looks better than Universal's HD DVD even though it is only 1080i.

The trend I have been noting & is bothersome is not the picture, it is the audio.

Don't let the dts-HDMA lossless tracks fool ya. Audibly the 448kbps Dolby tracks are identical. Only at real high volume levels did I detect distortion with the Dolby but I am talking levels which are definitely not suitable in any listening environment.

Question Rob Zombie's Halloween (Alliance) question

i just got this in the mail today from a seller on Amazon. Silly me didn't notice that the seller was from Canada . I live in the US. Before I open this blu-ray and enjoy it I had a question. Does this Alliance Canadian release utilize the same picture and audio transfer that the US disc uses? I'm curious cause I wanna know for sure. If the US disc is a better transfer than the Canadian disc than I'll either return this or sell this and snag the US disc. I just like to have the best quality available that's all. And which is why I invested in Blu-ray

Chances are that yes, the content is identical. To be 100% sure though.. what is the disc in question?

Whoops lol, I rarely look at reply titles. Anyways, yes that disc is the exact same as the US one. Only minor cover/disc art differences.

I would love to know too. I have the U.S. versions but I just joined Columbia House and picked the Alliance versions. I've heard that Alliance when copying a disc, does it well and the quality should be identical but I haven't had anyone compare the 2 yet.

I'm going to put the U.S. versions up for trade but maybe I'll hold off until I hear back.

That statement is FALSE!
Whenever Alliance releases a disc in Canada along with the USA release, the discs are almost always identical (with a few exceptions - see thread on The Wrestler).
The issue with alliance releasing discs in 1.78:1 ratio when they shouldnt be is due to the fact that they get masters of the film that were meant for HDTV broadcast. This is only an issue when Alliance releases a blu-ray on their own (without a coinciding USA release). This isnt always the case though... they have released quite a few disc with OAR other than 1.78/1.85:1

I am not 100% sure but I think the Kill Bill discs are the same.

So I count about 9 in your list where the OAR is not there. According to the lists here at blu-ray.com there are 125 Alliance Blu-rays. Does 9/125 = 7% equate to the definition of "usually"?

It is well known that Alliance releases many films on blu-ray without OAR. I am not disputing this. However, these cases only exist when Alliance releases a blu-ray on their own (ie. not in conjuction with a USA blu-ray release)
For example, Alliance released The Haunting in Connecticut in Canada. However, it is identical to the USA release besides the fact that they slapped their logo on it.
They dont go out and change the aspect ratio of their blu-rays cause they think people like their screens filled.
Also, 1.78:1 is still widescreen... not full screen, dispite the fact that it fills the screen :P

Both Kill Bill blus are the same as the US releases. Except in the cases of the Kill Bill blus coming out today in Canada, which include a bonus DVD of the film and a lenticular slipcover!

I hate re-stating this over and over, but the only releases that Alliance "messes up", are only ones they release on their own (or... when the US doesn't have a release yet.) When a disc comes out in the US (say Kill Bill 1, or Final Destination 1), Alliance is able to acquire all the data needed from the US source, so they can provide Canada with a disc.

Thanks, I have heard this plenty of times but it was more the Kill Bill issue for me. Everyone said they THINK they're the same and that Alliance copies the disc if there's a US version but no one could say for sure if they WERE identical. I put them up for trade anyway based on what everyone was saying. Sorry for the repeated questions.

Ah no problem. Better safe than sorry really. Just re-stating here, transfers are identical to US release on the Kill Bills.
