There are lots of movies out now that depict what could happen if someone (usually the government) abused this data capture/manipulation capability (The Net, Live Free or Die Hard, Eagle Eye). If it's any consolation, I don't believe that they use BD-Live data to identify individuals (if they are really collecting it, as you claim). They use such data in aggregate statistics for marketing purposes. If you have digital cable or satellite, they are tracking every thing you watch. So what? Don't be paranoid. It's not like the FBI is going to break down your front door because you watch too many violent movies. They just need that data for neilsen ratings and such, so they know what we want to watch (and buy). Why do you think (starter) digital cable is the same price as analog? Because they can sell that information. Come on, they have to make money somehow. If it bothers you, unplug everything. Go live like a bear in the woods and no one will know of your existence. Nah, I think I'll live with the luxuries like Blu-ray and just ignore the little electronic shadows all over the place. (Do you think the sponsors of Blu-ray.com don't know who you are?) You're part of the Blu-ray buying public. That's who you are. I say, if they want to watch, let them watch what I watch (and buy). |

BD-Live features are internet connected, not cable TV connected.
So, having your TV connected to cable television has nothing to do with it. All you need is an internet connection and a BD-Live enabled player. |

I've never listened to the commentary tracks on DVDs and don't plan to on BD. However, I DO like some of the "making of...." featurettes. I will NOT be happy if I am forced to go log in to some slow-a** server somewhere just to watch a simple extra that is usually included on the dang disk. I say forget the seemingly stupid BD-live and just package a 2nd disk with extras on it! And so what if it's "only" DVD? |

well I was glad to find out that what you were talking about was different from what the titles presumes. I was expecting a "this is a huge marketing tool that no one uses/is not useful"

Most BD live movies are imports in my collection (US versions). I tried connecting on Sleeping beauty but it wanted US address etc.
I think the studios should audition this stuff to blu ray buyers to see what % of people would actually use it. I'm guessing BD live features are cumbersome because not all BB services are the same. You can't go putting some hi-res 50mb material on there if it takes about 1 hour to download, that would be ridiculous. The best option which has not been mentioned is paying X price for movie alone, then having an option to buy the online feature disc separately later on. I don't want features on every disc, but would for the occasional release. |
