For my money, Total Recall is his magnum opus.

Veroeven is like Ridley Scott where they both have two classics and then a whole lotta crap.

elle is his masterpiece. I say this as someone who had his mind blown seeing robocop and total recall at a very young age.

My opinion could change, however, if more of Verhoeven's Dutch works were released o Blu-ray. Haven't seen most of them.
I wish I still had it... back in school for a screenwriting class, I wrote a paper on the genius of basic instinct as a modern noir masterpiece. I remember people laughing when I pitched the idea, but I did wind up getting an A. I'd even go as far as to say that is the best thriller of the 90s.

have you ever seen the fourth man? first heard about it in a bonus feature for basic instinct. it's really quite good.

it's a bummer his early Dutch stuff hasn't made it to blu ray. kino put put spetters, with a commentary, and that release is absolutely worth picking up. his first movie is on youtube with english subs. search it under the dutch title wat zien ik. it's a screwball comedy with prostitutes. and it's pretty great.

also, black book is pretty freaking fantastic movie and should have been a huge success.

even verhoeven has admitted that hollow man was the one time he tried to pull back. and it really shows. I think it might easily be his worst movie. and it's a bummer that it pretty much ended his career in america. the studio didn't know what to do with him, they didn't understand why his work was so successful.

It was a hard decision between RoboCop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers, all great flicks but I have to go with Total Recall.

RoboCop is my favorite movie from the Dutch director, with Starship Troopers and Total Recall (1990) both not being far off neither. I actually liked much of his work, even the infamous Showgirls which I can tolerate in a "so bad its good" level.

let’s knock the “so bad it’s good” shit off when we talk about showgirls. it’s not sexy, and it’s not supposed to be. that’s the issue people have with the movie.

Still have a bunch of his to see, but RoboCop was a childhood favorite so I can’t see anything beating that!

Tough call between RoboCop and Total Recall, but RoboCop has the more iconic character IMHO. Both excellent films.
