This, of course, will serve to completely counteract the efforts aimed at preserving the environment with these cases.
I agree with this as well. . . What I don't agree with is that everyone is assume that their artwork will get damaged without even trying the case. How will it be damaged much easier? Just because there are areas that will be punched out behind the jacket does not mean the cardboard artwork will be damaged a lot easier. Will there be a slightly higher risk of damaging the artwork? Sure. Is it a significant amount? Probably not. Most disc cases are stored back to back to back. How will this case design be more inherent to damage in this most common of situations? 99% of the time 99% of the blu-ray cases will be stored like such.

Anyways. . .I'm going home to watch QoS!!!! Enjoy the movie everyone.

I agree.

I think that if you buy a cup of coffee and the cup is more environmentally friendly, that's great. You are going to throw it away 15 minutes later.

However when you buy a Blu-ray for you collection you are going to keep it forever. The case matters.

That does make sense.........right now.

But what do you think happened to all those VHS cases? and "eventually" DVD cases?

The fact is, one day these blu-ray cases everyone cares so dearly for (including me) will be thrown away. When that happens, the less the better.

Also, as it was already pointed, out the manufacturing process is the main point of being enviornmentally friendly right now.

I think this is going to backfire on them. As I said previously, you will see a lot of people tossing these cases and replacing them with new ones. Just thinking, there is probably a good way to save on plastic. Don't provide the DVDs and Blu-ray discs with cases to places like Netflix, Redbox Blockbuster online, they don't need them anyway. There is probably a lot of that plastic going to landfills.

just out of curiosity, for those that bought some of the recent Criterion blu releases (Third Man comes to mind since that is the only one I own), or There Will Blood on DVD, did you mind the eco-friendly paper cases, or would you strongly have preferred just a universal dvd/bluray case? (I'm guessing the latter)

I for one do not like these new cases. I little while back my boxer got ahold of my Terminator 3 Blu. (Carelessness on my part) He messed up the case and the artwork, however his teeth did not go all the way through the case. So while the case and artwork were trash the actual movie was not. All I had to do was reprint the cover and get a new case. However, if this had happended to one of these "green" cases his bite could have just as easily destroyed the blu inside as well. I will probably be one of the people that replace these with some covers from sleevetown.

Yes everything will eventually end up in a junkyard. Agreed. But whenever I let go of something it is via eBay or to a friend and the higher quality packinging will either get me a better return on eBay or be appreciated by the friend.

A small example though of how long some stuff stays around...I just saw a book in the University of Toronto library that was published in 1809. It was still in the library and was readable. I hope my blu-ray collection lasts a while.

I have to admit when I opened it I was just

but as long as it doesnt chance my disc being hurt in the long run then I am cool with it, I didn't notice the difference until I opened the case, otherwise it looks just like any other blu

You don't buy movies based on the future fact you will sell them to make a profit. If you are thinking that, you are investing in the wrong stuff.

I wouldn't mind having the cases. Less plastic and you maintain the same profile of the case. What is better than that?

Awesome cases, I will definitely not be replacing any of these gems with the old boring cases.

Unfort. sometimes when you go to store or order off the internet they may have cases that will be banged up... with these new openings these cases can be more prone to care issues.

Now I know some out there don't care what their discs are releases in some would use a paper bag if they could.

I will also say there is NOTHING wrong with having a quality product. I am paying a few more dollars for my BLU RAYS yet .. I am supposed to take a case that is lesser than a DVD counterpart? I don't think so.

The cases are a bit cheaper and I voiced my opinion before under the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS thread.

Maybe if they could try to cover all openings maybe not as thick but try to be as decent of quality I can live with it.

again I recycle etc... but you have to draw the line somewhere.
If you already take good care of your stuff, as I am sure everyone in here does, then why are you so worried. It is hilarious how many people are getting all worked up about this. I am just playing devil's advocate here. The cases are not of lesser value or quality. Clearly they are up to the specs of Elite, who has made most of the cases in your collection, so they must be quality. Some people draw the line somewhere, and some are happy with doing everything they can to help their planet. To each their own.

I check for that crap now when I buy movies, screw having a completely worthless case. Next two up - Seven Pounds and the One, doubt they'll have the irritating holes.

Fox should have done their market research better. I will simply avoid buying Blu-rays in this packaging style. I have no interest in helping the environment when I buy my Blu-rays. I want the regular cases. Are consumers getting a discount for accepting these inferior cases? Absolutely not, the only entity saving money here is Fox and MGM.

I would strongly encourage consumers who agree with me to contact Fox and MGM directly.

you might not, but other people may. i think it's awesome that there are environment-friendly procedures taking place for something as unlikely as a bluray case. does that mean i think everyone should like them? of course not. i get that many people disagree and disprove of them, and fox/mgm/whoever issues these out may in fact stop doing so if enough people complain. all i'm saying is, it's just a bluray case. you open it, you watch your movie, you close it. it's not like you can even see the holes when you are displaying them. now granted if cases are doing a poor job of protecting the bluray and when shipped break/crack easier, that's a completely different issue. but as for just having holes in it, so long as my disc doesn't get scratched (which it could...i haven't actually owned one of these yet)and doesn't fall out, i'm a ok with them. i'm also slightly bias since i keep my blus in a binder and just use the cases for display

again, this is just my perspective. other people like yourself may have a stronger opinion on it and that's perfectly fine, i'm just offering a counter argument

One thing worth noting is that many of you who dislike these cases actually picked up your copy instore and had no idea the case was different.

I can't help but think that the quality can't be that bad/different if you weren't able to tell the difference when you took it off the shelf and only noticed it once you opened it.

I haven't gotten one yet, but I for one like them.
