The proper spelling is Blu-ray Disc. No capital R.

For aesthetics and the fact I am not a gamer, the PS3 was not an option. I prefer a standalone player, and in my opinion, the Panasonic BD series are top notch.

This thread might very well end tragically......

If you're just looking for a Blu-ray player then go with a Panasonic. PS3 is nice if you are a gamer and it has a few other advantages as well such as built in Wi-Fi, but I expect more players to come with this before long. Also the new Samsungs are Wi-Fi ready and one of the models comes with a dongle attachment to make it Wi-Fi out of the box. It's really just comes down to what you looking for and what you plan to use it for.

I am on board with this completely, both in what you have to say about a standalone and its aesthetics....as well as how this thread might end.

I use the PS3 since well, I have other family members that play games, it loads Blu-rays VERY quickly ... faster than most standalone players, I can access remote multi-media servers and view all my pictures you can use it for web browsing and chat and more. It has a lot of features... and I do play games but only some times. As a blu-ray player... it is fast/updatable with the most features that other players do not have supporting all the latest playback standards

I guess I bleed Sony blood, I,ll say PS3 if your wanting to do more than just a stand alone player, or Sony BDP-S550. Kind of hard to find, being replaced by the BDP-S560.

While I have 3 60gig PS3's, my favorite BD player so far is the Panasonic DMP-BD60. It's a sweet little machine.

I like the Panasonic BD line (own a BD30) and what little time I spent with Sony's S350 didn't reveal any major problems. The BDP-83 is going to start shipping next week, though, so I'd toss it into the mix here. It is fast (on par with the PS3, but without the potential fan noise problems), feature-laden, and easy to use.

I upgraded from a PS3 to a Panasonic DMP-BD80 and I have not looked back. I love the appearance of a standalone in my HT and I like to be able to bitstream my audio. I cannot think of anything my PS3 does better than the BD80 really.

However, I would get the BD60 if you do not need the analog outputs on the BD80. I basically got the BD80 for the price of the BD60 so that is the only reason I have it. But it does have a cool playback window that shows the codec and bit-rate of the audio/video tracks as well as HDMI video output mode. The PS3 also does this so this is not really a unique feature but it was nice to see it in my standalone.

Well since I own both a PS3 and a Panasonic BD I choose Panny. At least if your doing strictly BD playback. If you want a device that can also play games, play media over a network, browse the web, and rip music then the PS3 is #1.

The best Blu-ray player is Oppo BDP-83 because I bought it last night for $560 and I need to justify it to my wife.

BD stands for Big Daddy. Anybody who dares to disagree will be banned.
