I know! They were pumping these out one per year during the 80's.

It's really easy. Follow the Blumhouse model, keep the budgets low, around $3-5m and allow the Writer/Director more creative freedom. Voila! At the absolute minimum you'd make your money back on the name recognition alone.

STUPID!
The 2009 film had a $19 million budget, and given increase in film costs in general over time, this seems very much in line with that.

I didn't think the budget was the stupid decision (it's not like How Do You Know costing $120 million, $100 million after tax rebates), it's letting the credit that would cover over a fourth of the cost expire.

He's actually got a very good point. If you've watched Split recently, you'll realise how damn possible it is to make a very good movie on a smaller budget. Split was $9 million reportedly. Even if we needed more practical effects etc. I think only a retard can't get that done within a $10-15 million budget and that's still quite high for the practical effects type of movies starring mostly no names.

Friday the 13th should be cheap to make without compromising quality and can Imo easily be done under $15 million and that budgets actually a very, very generous amount considering Split cost $9 million.

It's retarded that the remake even cost $19m. A Friday the 13th film doesn't need much more than a good location to shoot and practical effects. There's no way on earth it should EVER cost more than $10m!

I'd say there was some "Producers" shit going on with the Platinum Dunes remakes.

Like...perhaps half of the budget were pocketed by Michael Bay to add five more explosions to whatever next crappy Transformers movie he happened to have been making at the time or something.

Anyhow, i'm still optimistic Jason is coming back to the big screen sooner or later with the hype surrounding the new game. We just have to wait for Paramount's rights to expire, since they're shoving they give as much of a shit for the series as they did back in the day before they gave the rights to New Line Cinema. I just hope Cunningham doesn't give the series to Jason Blum (ugh).

If this is true I'm not at all sad about it being cancelled. You don't try to 'class up' Friday the 13th.

Actually I wouldn't have minded that since that's the only angle they haven't done yet. Digging into Jason's familial past would also have been welcome.

Getting Bette Midler for Pamela may have been cool, and I think It Follows is a good model given how inspired it was by 70s and 80s horror. But I agree that this is not a franchise to class up (its supposed to be a guilty pleasure), and not sure about that storyline either.

Bette Midler as Pamela?

Ehhhhhh...I would rather have the Big J decapitating unlucky sleigh riders "Silent Night Deadly Night" style.

I'm all for a more uptown take on "Friday the 13th", but this (I assume partially fake) attempt just doesn't ring right with me.

Well not that I believe that creativity is required for a Jason film, but in general creativity can only flourish of you take risks. Jason goes to Hell wasn't stellar, but I admire it's attempt to shake things up. It dared to be different.

Jason in Winter is not a bad way to set things up. His lake frozen, blizzard occurence.... Even Jason needs to keep warm, so he holds up in a household full of winter vacationers.

Everybody wants "Jason's Winter Bloodbath". It's the "Pamela is taken over by Jason" concept that's really dodgy.

I love Jason Goes to Hell, but revisiting the possession angle in a non-trashy, ultra serious way doesn't seem a lot of fun to me.

I'd be quite interested in perhaps James Wan or the director from Krampus trying their hands and perhaps a bit more of a left field choice actually given his recent movie. M. Night Shyamalan. He's maybe due a little resurgence and I think he'd do really well sicking to a small budget, coaxing talented performances although McAvoy probably deserved the most credit already for being great. I think he'd definitely know how to ratchet up the suspense and reveals. After all, he's put all that sorta stuff to use in prior movies.

Double-posting my thoughts from another thread...

I'd like to see a new Friday the 13th movie sooner rather than later, but I'm not entirely disappointed by this news.

The advance talk about the plot of the now-canceled upcoming release as an origin story featuring Jason's father leads me to believe that this movie would have sucked so hard that its lips would have had friction burns on them.

My advice to the filmmakers of the inevitable release is not to think too hard about this. All that you need is Jason Voorhees, a bunch of good-looking college kids, a wooded campsite, a couple of nude scenes, and some non-CGI gore makeup.

Don't dick around with the mythology, folks. Just introduce a bunch of college kids and have Jason show up and kill them off, as though the previous movies never happened. Friday the 13th movies are like James Bond movies, in that, the less that you try to think about the overall chronology, the better off your viewing experience will be. Think of each Friday the 13th film is a separate "campfire story" that is independent of the other films.
