A little of both.

I say transfer and encoding for separate releases that both have issues and I get the same puking of blatant lies that I say it is on the filmed source.

A waste of time.

In your statement you called me misinformed when I stated from the beginning that both discs have issues that have everything to do with how they were transferred and not the original restoration.

I actually agreed with Geoff and yes that translates to Kino's issue. The first response to my post was out of line.

I have made my issues quite vocal about my bad experiences with Kino and nothing from my first post defended them.

I bought knowing the errors and that I would still rebuy it later if it got better over my love for the film.

there were 3 brief shots during the first 15 minutes (right after you see Robert Duvall on the swing, and 2 shots of Brooke Adams staring at her boyfriend from her window) where the screen darkens and then brightens for some odd reason.

There is motion blur when you see a closeup of people's (pods) legs walking about to chase Sutherland and Adams....

That's all I could find wrong with this disc--- other than that the picture is leaps and bounds better than any other blu ray versions-- clarity is stunning in shots and color and darkness levels looked great on my OLED---

Glad I didn't listen to the hysteria here and bought the disc....
That is THE most annoying thing about this disc for me. It happens in those 3 places you mention, as well as another when Donald Sutherland is on the phone and he looks out the window, there's that weird brightness shift again. The brightness shift with Brooke Adams at the window is brutal. The other ones aren't as bad but they're there. It's just so jarring and takes you out of the film for a second.

Green splotches are definitely there as well.

I wouldn't call it "hysteria" but clearly you also found things wrong with the disc (and you have the same UHD player as me). Those brightness shifts should not be happening. And this is all because of a crappy encode. It's certainly not the worst encode I've ever seen on a UHD, but it's also not a very great one.

Just watched this last night. Didn't have any brightness fluctuations in those scenes (viewed in Dolby Vision). The encode had a Shout Factory look to it, but the new scan is too good to go back to my MGM disc.

Yeah. That's a pretty accurate description.

I also won't be going back to previous versions as overall this is an improvement. It's just that yeah, it can still look better than it does here.

Hello.

Anyone got a good quality scan or mock-up of the cover (particularly the back cover) of this Kino 4K UHD edition? I wanted to customise the cover a little bit.
Thank you.

It's such a shame the encode is what it is. I've spot checked the disc several times, but have yet to watch it all the way through. But the colors on the transfer are really nice. I'm going to watch it as soon as I finish my Cannon Films Christmas marathon I do every year.

isn't that odd that you didn't have the same effect that Matt89 and I did...

I also watched it in Dolby Vision. I think this just goes to show that people screaming about quality issues need to be taken with a grain of salt. Clearly different set-ups, different equipment, and different settings on TV's yield different results.....

Finally got around to watching this. Man it is simply beautiful. I paused and tracked forward, got real close to the TV (using Dolby Vision Z9D).

I don't see what the problem is at all? This is an amazing 4K!

These green splotches that are posted on her are absolute madness. Nothing like that is on this disc.

I am proud to own this baby, and if this is all we get, I will be darn glad. Just like with Misery, the upgrade is well worth the "faults". It is an absolute huge jump from everything that has come before, and I still have the Shout disc! Much better than the original bluray as well.

It's been mentioned many times that DV is hiding the issue pretty well. That doesn't mean comments about quality should be ignored or taken with a grain of salt. It just means there's an issue but DV is covering it up fairly well. Those without DV have the issue, and they shouldn't. So the issue still stands.

You watched it with DV so of course the issue is greatly reduced. If you could disable DV in your player (some players let you and some don't) and just watched it with HDR10 you might notice it.

I’ve just done that and there was almost zero difference in terms of ‘green splotches’ (there were none) during the scene where Jeffrey takes out the rubbish to the road - maybe a slightly fuzzier grain field, if that’s what it’s called, on HDR than on Dolby Vision. But barely.

Aside from a couple of very brief moments early on, as mentioned in previous posts, this is a very good transfer that I was expecting to look dodgy. Frequently incredible, in fact.

No one's calling out the transfer for being bad. It's the encode and compression of said transfer that looks sloppy.

Sure. You’re Dolby Vision-capable. Why wouldn’t you?
