So, there I was playing Wipeout (for about 2 hours), when the screen froze and the PS3 shut off leaving just a flashing red light. Turned it off at the mains for about 10 minutes and turned it on again. Green light, yellow light, flashing red light, nothing more. Left it off over night to try again and guess what? Green light, yellow light, flashing red light! I believe it's now official, it's dead
![]() Anybody got any bright ideas how I can fix this without it costing an arm and a leg, or involving me taking the PS3 apart (which would basically mean turning one large black monolith into lots of little bits of scrap)? I'm not in a happy place ![]() |

I fear you have met the dreaded Yellow Light of Death. It happened to me four months ago so I know your pain. Unfortunately I don't have any idea how to fix the issue aside from calling Sony and having them repair it (or more likely send you a refurb unit).

There's a shop near me that I think does repairs so may have a look there tomorrow to see what they say. After a little investigation it seems like it could be either a power supply issue or the solder around the CPU/GPU has finally taken too much heat and gone kaput! If repair looks like it's going to be too much I may hold off until the smaller/cooler/cheaper model is released. The thing that pee's me off the most are my potential lost saved games, really don't want to have to play through all of them again just to get back on track with trophies and things (luckily the trophies I have will be safe). I'm guessing if I get a new one and put in the the 250gb HDD that's in the knackered PS3 it will just automatically format it wiping everything off it?

Nope can't be done. You need to make a backup of your HDD on the system that broke unfortunately.
Try fixing the YLOD like I did, I think there's a link to info on the OP. It may not last you long, but hopefully it'll fix it long enough to make a backup. By the way, Copy protected saves CANNOT be moved to a new system by any means no matter what. I tried for a long time to get my KZ2 save over, it's just not possible. |

My red/black wire does not seem to be "severed." There is still a yellow bit connecting them at the end but it is disconnected from... wherever it was connected to. Do you know how to reconnect the wire? Last edited by jc89; 07-29-2009 at 04:18 AM. |

I believe people have tried that, and it didn't work? I was told there is NO WAY to get your data off you hard drive UNLESS you use the backup data from the PS3 menu.
Also, don't waste your time sending it to any local repair shops, the YLOD cannot be "fixed". You will only temporarily fix the situation, and end up spending more money in the end. The YLOD is unrepairable. If you want your system fixed, contact Sony. If you want your data, unfortunately you're going to have to open up your system, do the temporary fix, and then contact Sony. However, be careful not to mess anything up. They can refuse service if you tamper too much inside the system. |

I wish there was a way. Sony knows the algorithm so could make a utility for it... It would need to carefully implemented/controlled... but I could see a guy from support on the phone giving us a rather large code to put in. Otherwise mass piracy would be as easy as trading HDD.

Sony should at least do something in-house that will transfer the data from one hard drive to a new one. If so, I wouldn't have had to repair the YLOD myself just because I needed to back-up my data. Then I had to send it to Sony in the end anyway.

So basically my only option to get my saves is to either fix it myself, or get someone other than Sony to fix it (as they'll want me to put the original 60gb drive back in which will cause a reformat when I put the 250gb drive back in once I get it back). Nuts!
I know that trophies are linked to my id but will I still keep the ones I have even though the saves won't match the trophies? (assuming I will have to start from scratch on games). |
