It's a great film with a tense plot. It's well worth a blind buy.

That far too many people on this forum are just as bored and ccfixx may need professional counseling...

No, really I think it's very interesting, especially as those who have answered have often collected Criterion releases for quite a few years, it looks like. It shows that the high-quality of Criterion's releases keeps buyers loyal and coming back for more.

Agreed. I found it very interesting that a large number of people started with Akira Kurosawa or Wes Anderson, but continued with Criterion & now have new favorite films & directors!

Surprisingly, that's not the first time I've heard that, McC.

I listed it as my favorite Criterion (so far) but I would have to put "Pierrot Le Fou" right up there with it. I just finished watching "Wings of Desire" also, and I must say I liked it a lot.

My first Criterion disc purchase was the box set of 5 Hitchcock films, now oop. I think the first one I watched was The 39 steps. I love their versions of those films. I followed this up with Walkabout (looking forward to the forthcoming Bluray), Grey Gardens and Heaven Can Wait.

I did soon after borrow a few from a rental store - the original DVDs of The Third Man, The Wages of Fear, Brazil, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I would not part with that Hitchcock set. Nor will I let go of Heaven Can Wait.

On the bluray side of things, I think their release of 8 1/2 is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen, although I've never seen their DVD version. I felt that their early DVDs of The Third Man and The Wages of Fear had rather poor compression. This was greatly improved on the reissue DVDs (I have the reissue of Third man), and of course, the blurays blow the DVDs out of the water (I think Wages is a more dramatic improvement on bluray than The Third Man).

Hopefully B&N will have one of their famous 50% off Criterion sales soon!

I ordered the Vivre sa Vie poster from the Criterion store and it now hangs on my wall. Looks classy. Now I just need the Blu-ray to go along with it.

Did you get a frame for it?

I'm looking for a good frame for mine (and Pierrot).

Yes, I just picked up a basic poster frame from the local Michaels store (luckily they were having a 40% off sale). It's nothing fancy, but I didn't want to spend too much.

Just watched Yojimbo the other night and I would definitely consider that my new favorite Criterion. I have yet to finish "Days of Heaven" and I need to watch "Bigger Than Life" and "Rashamon" next. But yet I do love "Wages of Fear".

Could someone give me their opinion of Pierrot le fou? I rarely, if ever make blind buys and I'm not a Criterion collector, but I know it is out of print (but still available at Amazon and the Criterion website apparently) and my brother, who is a film student and French New Wave nut loves it (although our tastes differ a lot of the time). The only other Godard film I've seen is Breathless, quite a while ago, but I do remember liking it.

I never saw The Third Man, then when I did finally watch it, I loved it and wanted to buy a copy, but since it was then out of print I had to pay probably twice what I would have a few months prior. I obviously do not want to repeat that, which is why I'm even asking people instead of just renting it myself. Anyway, like I said, I would love to hear some thoughts on the film from people here that have seen it

I just watched Pierrot Le Fou and have to say I really don't get it. Yes, Godard is trying to break the narrative and yes some of his camerawork is beautiful but it is a film that is so in love with the smell of its own farts that it forgets how bad they smell. The acting is completely pedestrian, the dialogue constantly sounds like it's being read from a philosopher's handbook, and it seems to ramble without any real point other than that it exists. Well, great, you made a film unlike any other but there is a reason for that. It's a movie with absolutely no story structure at all. It's just a rough juxtaposition of normalcy on a grand, egotist stage. Now, I know a lot of people here love Godard and I certainly respect their opinion but I love so many filmmakers and films from Wenders to Kuosawa to Bergman to Fellini and all of their best works speak to me. I feel like Pierrot La Fou is mute.

Interesting, thanks for the insight

Especially the line about farts which had me cracking up. I certainly don't need a clear narrative to enjoy a film, but the other problems you pointed out really give me doubts about how much I would like it. I definitely still wanna see it, but I think I'll just go for the rental.

I've got a question to ask, I ordered the Yojimbo/Sanjuro boxset from amazon and the package came today but when I opened it i saw that the Yojimbo BD box was all ripped and messed up, so my question is where do I complain at amazon, the post office, where?

PS

is it possible to get a replacement case from Criterion directly?

Contact Amazon my friend, they will send you a replacement with no problem. Heck they even pay the return shipping for the defective one, you have to send back the defective one within 30 days.

I would be surprised if they will stock the Godard release. Sometimes the best Buy stock is hit and miss. Some titles they stock others will just come up on their .com as online only.

I want the Godard one bad... if I find it early I will grab it up. but not holding my breath yet.
