Default Speaking of DDL...

Gangs of New York.”

For $13, I figured this would be one of the better blind-buys I’ve made recently. From the start, it had me engrossed; the opening battle was awesome, settings were immersive, the narrative informative, the characters interesting; the entire setup was good.

After an hour or so, my interested started to fizzle as the film started to drag. It’s pretty darn long and feels a bit dragged out throughout the middle. The film does reach an interesting conclusion, and ultimately it has its fair share of interesting moments (the historical elements and period reproduction are especially noteworthy; acting is great too), but it wasn’t 100% engaging as I hoped it would be (repeated viewings might change my mind though, we’ll see…).

4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

This remastered Blu-Ray looks awesome, with excellent detail, color, and contrast, and it sounds awesome with plenty of bombastic moments.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Wizard of Oz

Film: 5/5
-this is my 3rd viewing in about a year, and it really holds up well to repeated viewings. I really love the whole ambiguity of whether Dorothy
[Show spoiler]really did or didn't go to Oz. She's knocked in the head, falls to the bed, and the tornado is right there at the house: perfectly ambiguous circumstances for the "did she or didn't she scenario"?
. Another thing struck me: Toto is one heck of a well-trained dog! Obviously his trainer was behind the camera all the time, but doing things like holding out his paw or digging under a door then running away...just incredible training.
-most of all, I love how the film message is just as applicable to adults as kids (dorothy's last line back home, and her line in Oz about looking no further than her own backyard). it all speaks for itself and is timeless.

PQ: 5/5 (I never saw the error people talk about at the end. This is one of the best transfers I've ever seen, for the age of the source. Oz looks like it was filmed in 2005!)

AQ: 4/5

What a brilliant/beautiful film. I have seen bits and pieces of this before but never the whole thing. I love the way the film starts off with no score or music. It really grabbed my attention. A long film but it flew by. I can't believe this was 2 1/2 hours long. It seemed shorter.

DDL is brilliant in this and most def deserved an Oscar for this role. Paul Dano did a ridiculous job as well. I really like him as an actor because he brings it for every role.

The story was pretty intense, especially the ending.

Def check this out if you haven't yet because this is something that really kept me thinking and wanting more every minute.

LIke you, I love that beginning too...just *chip* *chip* *chip* away at the rock. The PQ shows the sparks from the rock brilliantly. I do love the first score though, when
[Show spoiler]DDL falls down the hole, and the camera pans up to show the LONG path DDL has to crawl back to the town
and the score takes a loud screeching whirl, basically reinforcing the notion "he's f*cked" I love that score so much coz its almost like a narrator..that's how I hear it.

[Show spoiler]I think he did. He was a hoax. A lie. He pretended to be sombody that he wasn't. I'm guessing to be noticed, feel wanted. I would feel sorry for him but he took it overboard.

Wizrd of oz: 1.5/5, I couldn't stand this film. Honestly if it was released today people would be booing at the cinema. I do however understand how people could like it (ps: i'm not one to hate old cinema and one of my favourite films is a silent film from the 1920's).

Yea exactly man! When the score came in I said "Well damn that sucks" ha

Your right though the score did give off that extra character persona.

How chillingly ironic was it that Plainview had Eli
[Show spoiler](1) Stand up in front, (2) Yell loud, (3) Confess his sin, and then after he confessed (4) Beat him across the head - to purge the bad spirit! This is identical to the church, where Eli had Plainview (1) Stand up in front, (2) Yell loud, (3) Confess his sin and then after he confessed (4) Beat him across the head - to purge out the bad spirit.

the only difference? Eli used his pu@sy ***** palm slap (while DDL laughed). Plainview used the bowling pin. Plainview over-purged Eli

Like you I fricking love it also, I see it as a ominous foretelling of the grim future oil will get you, as well as how you describe it. The music usually has a big big role for me wether a movie can be a masterpiece for me.

I took it as a story of Greed. How far greed will get yeah. For DDL's character it was relationship with this son getting torn up.

"don't think i worded it right."
