Great movie. Its less an epic war movie and more a character study. So some think its "boring" compared to something like Ran. I couldn't imagine the movie looking better on Blu-ray than it does on the CC edition.

Thank you for the insight. It's on my wish list as well as Ran. Although, I've heard terrible things about the Ran blu-ray and am wondering whether I should wait to see if Criterion gets the rights to it again.

It's not a very good release. I own the Criterion DVD and bought the Studio Canal Blu-ray because I enjoy Ran but it's disapointing. It's very uneven, it's like a rollercoaster. Some scene are very beautiful but right after that others are just plain bad. For people who had the other none Criterion DVD it was actualy a bit of a improvement. Still I am happy I bought it because of how much I enjoy the movie. I can't tell you not to buy it if you don't have it on DVD already well you might wish to buy it anyway. Just don't expect a wonderful Blay-ray. You might consider buying the DVD if you can find it at a good price in the mean time?

I just finished watching "Kagemusha" and thought it was very good. If you're a fan of Kurosawa, I'm sure you would enjoy it also. I also have "Ran" on my want list but I will wait till I can find the Criterion release at a decent price.

This summer BFI will release on BD in UK the Yasujiro Ozu's movies:
Late Spring / Banshun (1949)
Early Summer / Bakushu (1951)
Tokyo Story / Tokyo monogatari (1953)

They are also available on DVD in Criterion Collection. Are there any chances that Criterion will release them on BD as well?

I would get all three of them if they come out as region free. Wonderful movies all three of them.

I hope so as I am waiting for this sale to pick up a few things

It seems like Criterion mirrors the BFI releases. I finally imported Red Desert, and Criterion have announced that for June. I imported Salo also, so I expect an announcement from Criterion at some point. Criterion are just about to release the Leopard, and the Red Shoes should be coming soon. Given Criterion's love for Ozu, I can't imagine they wouldnt release the titles listed above.

saw 35mm print of Ran. BD&Criterion DVD is the best it'll look unless SC found a new print somewhere.

just picked up Vivre at Best Buy. They also had Summer Hours, but I only had a $25 RZ cert, so $5 wasn't bad. It was strangely priced at $29.90??

If anyone wants to make predictions for tomorrow's announcements, here is the list of IFC titles that are unannounced:
Aruitemo aruitemo (2008, Hirokazu Koreeda)
La graine et le mulet (2007, Abdel Kechiche)
Y tu mamá también (2001, Alfonso Cuarón)
Following (1998, Christopher Nolan)
+
Antichrist (2009, Lars von Trier)
Fish Tank (2009, Andrea Arnold)

I think Following in July to coincide with the theatrical run of Inception sounds reasonable...

The Thin Red Line also awaiting a release date ... but I suspect that's for the Autumn along with Antichrist and Fish Tank, given their recent hints.

So, are you implying that the July announcements are definitely tomorrow? It's possible that they might not be until Friday, yes?

I decided to keep my DVD on this one along with the SC Blu-ray. I have heard that the chances of having something better for it are very slim. Still, amazing movie IMO

On a side note, ZIP is sending me Chungking Express, finaly I hope I receive it before Friday evening so I can watch it this weekend.

The Thin Red Line might not be released until November to coincide with Veterans Day and the theatrical run of The Tree of Life. And yes, Fish Tank and Antichrist probably won't be released until the autumn as well, that's why I separated them from the main list.

Of course there is a possibility that they might be announced on Friday, but tomorrow sounds more reasonable in my opinion.

It seemed to me Criterion typically announces on the 15th of the month.

But, they'll announce earlier or later if the 15th falls on a weekend.

Yeah, I was agreeing with you on "Red" later in the year along with the other two. I should've been more clear.

I haven't noticed yet if Criterion's hints are always issued in sequence ... if they are, "Red" could be released before the other two. Food for thought.

No sequence at all, I'm still waiting for Cronos, hinted a long time ago, more than a year, if I'm not mistaken.
