Apple will begin shutting down iTunes Store music downloads on March 31, 2019.
That's according to industry insiders who claim a phase-out of the service may help the firm keep up with a subscription-based streaming platforms such as Spotify. The news follows a leaked e-mail last month that revealed Apple will stop taking new iTunes LP submissions ahead of more widespread changes. The firm's own streaming service, Apple Music, has enjoyed growing popularity with around 40 million paid subscribers. The source also stressed that existing music downloads will always work on all Apple devices and the iTunes platform. |

Digital media subscription services are only good for tv shows and music. Currently for movies, its not good. Services like NetFlix and Amazon Prime loose licenses on the movies too quickly.

well vilya asked how much we spend on movies a while ago and I finally got around to calculating my spending for February though April and I bought $146.94 and sold $147 so I spent negative 6 cents over the last 3 months on physical media
![]() I normally spend more but I just haven't seen any really good deals at retail stores over the last 3 months or so. |

I went back 10 pages and contacted the top contributors to the thread on both sides who might not know about it being merged, renamed and moved. That way they can continue to contribute and the thread won't get buried in the forum

I haven't quite worked out how much I've spent on Blu-rays so far this year, but I know the next few months are going to be expensive. There's a nice Samuel Fuller boxset coming out from Powerhouse/Indicator, plus another Hammer set, and there's the possibility of a William Castle set too although I don't think this has officially been confirmed yet.

Really depends on the month. I would say on average about $100, but May is going to be pricey with 8 or 9 purchases in my sights, with a lot of UHD releases coming out with Atmos/DTS-X mixes on some classic movies. Scary thing is that there are some titles in that group of movies that will be the 4th version I own come May (Laser disc, dvd, Blu-ray, and UHD).

I use sales mostly. BlackFriday being the biggest one. I try to get my Blu ray cost to average out between 6.00-8.00 each. And I buy around 70 to 80 per year. I bought 74 Blu rays over Black Friday last year. And then another 12 through out the year before that sale. Call me cheap, but equipment upgrades add up pretty fast. I see quite a few movies in the theater first anyway, so it does not bother me to have to wait 6-18 months to own the Blu ray.

Movies depreciate so quickly its almost pointless to buy a brand new release. i do request them for gifts on christmas bday etc. If you really want to watch it, its $2 at redbox vs. $30. If its something great ill see it in the theater then pick it up on black friday or when its less than $15. Overall per year i won't pay more than $75, usually just my top 5 films per year. Now im more into collecting things that can actually increase in value like sports memorabilia.

No matter how a movie is purchased, disc or digital, I never think of them as an investment, so how much they depreciate is irrelevant to me. To be fair, practically everything I purchase depreciates sharply. It is not even a consideration. I do not sell used belongings online nor do I ever host a yard sale. Resale value is meaningless to me.
Buying, collecting, and watching movies and TV shows is a hobby. I gauge their value on the entertainment provided and the quality of the presentation. I like a bargain as much as anyone and I do take advantage of sales, but I will also purchase titles on release day if my interest is strong enough. If I want to see it now, that is all the reason I need to buy it now. All of my movie purchases comes form my monthly discretionary spending; money that was earmarked for my entertainment and nothing else. As such, my buying movies serves that purpose very well. I know people who spend more on tobacco and/ or alcohol in a given month than I do on my movie hobby. What do they have to show for the money they have spent? While that is their right, I certainly roll my eyes at it, especially when those same people think my movie acquisitions are a waste of money. Everyone indulges themselves somehow; movies are just one of my favorite methods. Last edited by Vilya; 04-14-2018 at 04:49 PM. |

It is the same for music too when you buy a CD, a vinyl copy or a download. Most people who buy them never ever view them as an investment; they purely buy them for the love & support of their favourite artists which is by & large a hobby.

Exactly, and well said Vilya. I've collected all matter of things, but never when it has come to my entertainment. Sure, I have digibooks, digipacks and whatnot in my library, but it is usually for uniformity or I got a screaming deal. My son has been picking up the Target exclusives. Outside of that, I usually try to get a great deal. Which is why I haven't commented on how much I'm spending.
As far as physical or digital? I'm kind of a middle of the ground kind of guy. I buy what I know I'll rewatch more than once. If not, I'll rent the BD from Netflix or use one of the streaming services. Something that I still can't seem to wrap my head around is how paying for this is different than paying for cable? Because I can't speak for anyone else's "HD" premium channels, but mine compared to the movies I watch via streaming ![]() |
