It looks like it is a pre-order sale anyhow. I can get it faster thru retail.

Loving the July announcements!

The Red Shoes case is not as exciting looking as I had hoped it would be, it is still nice though :-)

I am loving the Black Narcissus cover art. It is really cool.

Too bad they didn't release a "double feature" slip-case for Black Narcissus, and Red Shoes.... would be more likely to find a little price-break on them..... either way, looking forward to them (Have not seen the third)

Default Are these the only Criterion blu-rays out and are they going to do more?

Are these the only 2 Criterion blu-rays?

I would love to see EVERY Criterion sd dvd be transferred to blu-ray.

Didn't you need a couple of other films' "greatness" explained to you before in past posts, Jedi? Just do a search on them, read the Wikipedia entry and you shall have a better understanding. Obviously, everyone may not agree that they are all "great" films, but both the Powell&Pressburger films are heralded as "classics" for the most part. They both have amazingly shot cinematography with the use of Technicolor. Rent them if you haven't seen them and then decide if they're considered "great" by your standards. What the critics say and what every other person in the world considers "great" is not always one in the same.

I'm just not sure what there is to explain if you haven't seen any of the films, yet. If you have seen them and don't consider them to be "great," then someone else could chime in and give you their counter-thoughts as to why each one is "great" in their opinion. Until then, though, I think the proposed statement of wanting an explanation is a bit lazy.

I had deja vu considering the Dillinger Is Dead cover...

Also, I must admit that condiering the prescence of only one "surprise" BD title in July, the release that most interests me is the new Eclipse set, as I've never even heard of Sacha Guitry.

I believe RED SHOES may be Martin Scorsese's favorite film of all time.

I really wish that they still retained the rights to TALES OF HOFFMANN.

That's all I need to know.

I wonder if more films are yet to be announced today.

There are probably more than a dozen titles now, you may want to check out the Criterion Collection thread that is stickied at the top of the page.

As for having every Criterion DVD re-issued on blu-ray - it just isn't going to happen. For starters, Criterion doesn't even still have the rights to some of the titles... they're OOP in DVD already.

Here is a list of the Criterion titles listed on this website.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?studioid=70

They generally release 3-4 a month and while that output may increase with increased adoption of the blu-ray format, as blu bonnet says, they will never bring all sd titles to blu-ray, for many reasons including rights issues.

Thanks for the tip, I think I will buy the import.
I noticed The Red Balloon is also available in UK, any word on a US release soon? Maybe I'll jump on that too.
Do you have any other import suggestions (region free)?

ccfixx also forgot to mention that the extras on the MoC disc of Sunrise are in NTSC, so they are fully playable on USA players as well.

Look in my Collection as I try to note whether imports are region-free and how the extras are encoded. I have several from the UK and especially Eureka!/MoC and the BFI.

I have "The Red Balloon" release, as well, so I definitely recommend that one. I think a good thing to do is to skim through all of pro-b's(Dr. Svet) reviews on this site since he does the imports. You can click on his name in any of his reviews and it'll take you to all of the films he's reviewed. I did the homework... here's the list of pro-b's reviews. You can sort them however you want depending on if you want films with the higher-rated picture quality and whatnot. From there, I think you'll be able to find some hidden gems you might be interested in. Just keep in mind, though, that although the feature film may be region-free, a lot of the features on the imported discs are still in standard definition PAL so you wouldn't be able to access them without a region-free player with PAL->NTSC conversion. All of pro-b's reviews will tell you what's English-friendly or not on every disc.

Oh, and if you haven't already be sure to change your profile settings to allow yourself to see all the reviews and news for other countries.

Oh, and definitely get "The Double Life of Veronique" for the ridiculous price of £8.99 right now.

Am I the only one who thinks the Red Shoes cover is the best of this month?

Also on a side note for anyone, Godard's "Film Socialisme" will premiere at Cannes, out of competition of course.
