I couldn't agree more. Those Saturday night (or was it Friday night) double bills were fantastic. They used to show many American 1950's horror B-movies too I recall, as well as the Amicus and Hammer films.

Their excuse is they don't have the rights to show them any more. Well seeing as no other channel is bothering to show them either, I can't see it being that expensive to acquire those rights. But I guess it's far easier to show soaps and makeover garbage all day long.

Even the Moviedrome series BBC2 showed on Saturday nights was great. I remember Alex Cox presenting them for a long while.

Cox and Mark Cousins I believe. Cracking films also. Used to love the 5 min introductions by those genuine film fanatics.

That's right, Mark Cousins as well. Yes, those introductions were worth listening to as, like you say mate, they were people who loved film.

Even Channel 4 briefly had a film series similar to Moviedrome - can't remember what it was called, but Mark Kermode used to present it, and a few cult films were shown here too. I'm going back perhaps 20 years or so.

He introduced Extreme Cinema on Film Four mate. He would be the perfect choice for a new Moviedrome series.

He fronted the great ‘The Exorcist’ documentary that is included on the Blu-ray and he also did one for the utterly fantastic ‘The Wicker Man’.
The fact the guy loves Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me only cements my appreciation for the guy.

Cheers for that, it was beginning to bug me not remembering what it was. It was here that I saw Peter Jackson's Braindead for the first time. I only ever see Mark Kermode now on the BBC news channel reviewing cinema releases and DVD's. I don't know if he appears on anything else, but I've always found him a pleasure to listen to and he certainly knows his stuff.

He ‘got’ Fire Walk With Me’ straight away and recognised it for what it was which was a superb horror film. I agree with his view that Sheryl Lee should have won a Oscar for her portrayal of Laura Palmer. Many critics slaughtered the film but I think it was simply because they didn’t understand it. I love critics who stand their ground, I think time has proven his opinion to be spot on.

Fair play to Mark for standing his ground. I'm willing to bet that the critics who savaged the film were not even horror fans. That's sometimes the problem, you'll get a critic who reviews a film from a genre they do not even like - I do recall some woman many years back who did some reviews for a newspaper and NEVER gave a horror movie a good write up. Eventually it came out that she hated horror films.....incredible!

Was that the same woman who admitted to fast forwarding through some films? I remember reading about that many years ago. That’s why I stick to my favourites.

Wouldn't surprise me if she did. I honestly don't know her name, but I got the impression she was one of these Mary Whitehouse types. She was happy talking about rom-com type of films - the sort of movies you'll find Hugh Grant in. But anything else and she always gave the thumbs down.

When I watched TV in my youth; it was mainly coming from our aerial which was later upgraded to analog cable. We did not have a big range back then; only a maximum of 2 Irish channels with only 3 or 4 from the UK if you were very lucky to get them.

My late Grandparents house in Dublin switched over to analog cable which had gone through a huge uptake back in the 90's. Virgin Media Ireland who now manage the cable service in the Republic of Ireland, since their takeover of UPC, have recently made a big announcement last week for people who have remained on this service up until now. Virgin Media have said that they are going to close down all of the analog cable channels by the end of 2019. To start this off; they will give customers a leaflet in the post up to six weeks notice to switch over to their digital cable set top box or to another provider whenever possible. Each area who have these channels still available will be on a gradual reduction until late 2018 & then entirely switched off on a phased basis until late 2019. Their first area for reduction/switch off will take place in Mullingar in Co.Westmeath from Monday the 23rd of April.

Afterwards; it will happen in Dublin 15 from May.

The numbers of channels taken will be reduced by about half of it's current total from 17 down to 9 TV channels. The list showing the reduced numbers of channels is listed below. Analog cable in Ireland only serves around 20k to 30k people today. But when the end of 2019 comes around. People will get nothing from this service until they switched over to another provider or stick with a cable box.

It was well flagged by the cable company that this was going to happen for some time. I remember watching a lot of kids movies on Nickelodeon when I had it on cable. The movies on Nickelodeon ranged from Labyrinth with David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly which I now own on Blu-ray. Other movies from Saved By The Bell & The Olsen Twins were also shown on Nickelodeon. I had watched loads of kids tv shows from it & from a popular kids show & programme slot called The Den on RTÉ2 in Ireland. After school; I used to watch a lot of the TV shows from DC & Marvel on it from the 90's including the animated series from Batman, Superman & Spiderman & the 60's Batman show. I now own the 60's Batman show on Blu-ray from Amazon in Italy. There was other stuff like Action Man, James Bond Jr, Earthworm Jim, The Tick, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons Adventures, Pinky & The Brain, Bananas in Pyjamas, Thomas The Tank Engine, Mr Men & Little Miss, Ivor The Engine, The Clangers & Bagpuss. The only movie that I can remember watching on The Den is Thomas & The Magic Railroad which I own on DVD since a few years ago.

This cable switch off from Virgin Media won't affect me now because I had gone off cable since 2008 after my grandmother died of cancer. I switched over to just 4 channels on an aerial for 4 years until I got Saorview in March 2012. I then added free to air satellite to Saorview in November 2012. Saorview gives you 10 basic TV channels in Ireland on an aerial with 2 of the main channels in HD. The Satellite TV combi box gives me hundreds more of free channels, including some in HD, without me paying for a subscription. And I also have my DVD & Blu-ray collection to back me up when something good is not there on the service. It's just a wonderful experience to have that in the house today.

Forgive my ignorance, but what was The Den? Was it a TV channel?

Edit: Ah, it's OK, I've just re-read Dublinbluray's post.
