Oh man, I love adaptations of classic ghost stories. This sounds like it could be terrific

I'm excited too, ravenus! I've decided to wait and hope for a Blu-ray release, but I've put them on my rental list so I can have a look at the picture quality.

One does not excuse the other. It isn't like the artists and artisans who actually made any of the programs are the ones who junked them. It is the case of decades long bureaucratic idiocy destroying hundreds, if not thousands of hours of Britain's cultural legacy.

The BFI have previously said that "Blu-ray plans for the Ghost Stories will be entirely dependent on the availability of HD masters" and, as these are being released on DVD, I really doubt there will be a Blu-Ray release in the foreseeable future. When was the last time the BFI decided to withhold a Blu-Ray to make people double dip?

I suppose the best way to look at it is there's no use crying over spilt milk. We may as well focus on what we have, rather than what we don't. We can only enjoy what the BFI releases from the archive, not what doesn't exist anymore.

This suggests that they haven't checked? Why would they release something without checking if HD masters were available? It's all very peculiar, isn't it?

Or are they hoping to obtain masters from a source other than the BBC, perhaps?

I don't know. BFI releases often have booklets which provide information about the transfer, so we'll know when the first DVD is released.

My interpretation is that the ones which have available HD masters will be released on Blu-Ray.

Weren't they only filmed on 16mm? If so there's very little point in giving them the Blu-ray upgrade.

I do see what you mean, but have you seen the recent Poirot Blu-rays? They are astonishingly good:

Well I would hope BFI would check and clarify the issue prior to releasing the Ghost Stories on DVD. I don't want to be buying them only to learn that Blu-rays will come next year.

Very interesting, hadn't seen that before. Just goes to show the potential if they take the time to do a proper transfer. I'd got excited about the Brideshead Revisited Blu-ray release in the US, but it looks no different to the DVD. If it were given a decent transfer I think it could look amazing.

16mm has several times as much resolution to be fit for Blu-Ray!

Not considerably more. 16mm is closer to 2K (which is marginally more than 1080p), whereas 35mm is virtually 4K. There's not enough difference to be noticeable, hence my understanding why there's a reluctance from many distributors to release 16mm on Blu-ray (I know for a fact the BFI will only release 16mm on DVD - see Gazwrx for a good example).

All 16mm films BFI have released on Blu-ray:

Faces
Shadows
Nightbirds
Anti-Clock

I'm sure there are others.

Haha fair one - should have checked my facts there (especially as I own a couple of them)!

If 16 mm is close to 2K isn't it then very reasonable to transfer it to BD?

Yeah it is - got a bit confused there. My point was more to say that Blu-ray is closer to the same resolution as 16mm, not several times as was previously stated.

I disagree. This discussion started because you said

which is simply misinformation.

Don't forget, the BBC takes a license fee from just about every household in the UK.
[Show spoiler](Blind people only pay half!)
It is a government agency. Destroying its own library was like a food bank throwing away all its canned food because produce goes bad after a couple weeks.

No one is crying over spilled milk. They are saying that was absurdly stupid and destructive. There is a difference.
