It's a weak year when Benning's performance is considered a front-runner, as it was nothing special. Portman's performance was exceptional, there's no way around it.

I agree. There was no doubt Reznor was going to win, and the theme may have been catchy, but it's a very weak best score winner. The Inception score was used much more effectively.

Yeah, like overlaying the Kings Speech as they are shownig scenes from all the other Best Pic nominees. What a joke these awards are. Not sure why I watch- thank god for DVR.

and while i haven't seen The King's Speech yet. i hope it doesn't win Best Picture. just seems like such a bland, typical Oscar winner that it would be a boring way to go out. and with Portman, Firth and Bale seemingly all locks for their respective categories, i'd like some surprises tonight, but it doesn't seem like there will be many opportunities for that.

super excited! about 3 hours away!
WOW- all your worst fears came true. Must not have been a good night at your house.

I have to give props to Nolan besides his immense talent as a director and writer. The man is always impeccably dressed and groomed. He always looks like he just came from a GQ photo shoot!

He wants to be- go Youtube his appearance on Lettermen in Nov / Dec and I can definitely see him not being a career actor. Too much social awkwardness.

There was some serious cleavage last night and I'm talking in the audience not on stage. Penelope Cruz looked amazing as did Reznor's wife

For the most part I agree. Doesn't mean I have to like it considering Finchers Network was also up for best picture and has done well this awards season. When it comes down to two exceptional movies running neck and neck, I think a directors resume should certainly play a part in attaining the award.
Still, congrats to The King.

I completely disagree with that. If that were the case, then no directors with minimal experience, in comparison to a veteran, would ever get the award. In all honesty, The Social Network was a good movie, but it was not better than The King's Speech. It is that simple.

It does factor in occasionally. Some people are just "due" an Oscar. It's the reason Martin Scorsese won the trophy for The Departed.

Agree.

I love NIN and Reznor but The Social Network score sounds like stuff that didn't make the Ghosts album. Kinda weak. None of the tracks make you identify with scenes in the movie.

Does Hollywood hate David Fincher? Has he been disrespectful or insulting to others in Hollywood? I really don't understand why he didn't win best director. It's as if the industry is angry at him for something. Is there something he has said?

I was actually going for How to Train Your Dragon for score Inception's score was well done as well. Have to agree that Social Network's was okay, but not compared to Inception/How to Train Your Dragon.

It was an interesting night. For the most part, I was correct in my predictions.
King's Speech was a fantastic film and did deserve best picture. Regardless, I think we all knew Firth would win. It was nice to see Bale win for supporting actor. I liked his joke about the "f-word" haha. It was definitely a huge night for Natalie Portman. He performance in Black Swan was incredible and she deserved the Oscar for it.

Supporting actress was tough. I picked Leo because she had a lot of buzz surrounding her. I thought Hailee Steinfeld was awesome in True Grit but I didn't think the Academy would give it to her.

I had Fincher as best director. He did a great job with TSN but King's Speech definitely ruled the Oscar's last night.

I agree 100%. In my opinion, any nomination of The Kids Are Alright just did not sit well. I felt the movie and the acting was just very bland. The subject matter was very interesting and the premise seemed to have promise, but I was just underwhelmed. Benning was just good, but certainly not Oscar worthy. If you want to see her as a better actor, watch Mother and Child, where I thought she was fantastic!

I am surprise at how so many people still believe even up to last night that The Social Network was ever going to win Best Picture? I knew as soon as The King's Speech was out with the attention it was getting that it was going to win it.

A movie about a few geeks who become billionaires with a computer program with new actors or a historical drama with a bunch of British veteran actors?

I've never been a big Benning fan, but I'll check it out! I was even more shocked that Mark Ruffalo (who I like) was nominated. Supporting actor is almost always a very deep category, yet somehow his unremarkable and pedestrian performance was nominated. Surely there were better nominees out there? That whole category was weak this year, come to think of it. I greatly enjoyed Renner's performance and Hawkes was pretty good, but in a typical year none of the three would've been nominated imo.
