Still it's a very nice 2K scan don't you think with little grain and void of noise plus the audio is spectacular eh even Shore's score?

And do you agree with me that some of the gore even the famous scene has never looked better than ever with quality detail on HD as ever? nice extras too and better than MGM's bareboned DVD.

It's funny that one of the extras is courtesy of Subkultur.

After watching the Criterion disc completely last night I think this is a situation of pick your poison. The Criterion disc is definitely too dark and the color timing does ruin some scenes such as the ones at the facility. However, the compression/grain structure is slightly better than the Subkultur disc. On the flip side the Subkultur trumps the Criterion disc for color saturation. Just look at the shot of the red theater chairs as they look faded to oblivion on the Criterion disc. However, as pointed out earlier the contrast is a bit too high on the Subkultur disc. I realize Cronenberg supervised the Criterion disc, but something is definitely wrong with the color timing.

Sucks because i love Criterion's packaging. But the image is just too dark, soft, and has dull colors.

I honestly prefer the Subkultur disc. It's just hard in the darker scenes to get past the compression noise in the backgrounds.

Yeah based on your pictures that version is the best. I'll have to get that one.

By the way just so you all know. ShowTime HD will be showing this at 12:30PM. To me it looks better than the Criterion too the last time I watched it. I would love to know what you guys think.

Thanks for posting those screenies and confirming what I already suspected. From that moment I saw that teal shot of Lack, I knew this release wasn't for me. The only good thing I can say about this Criterion disc is that it does have some interesting extras.

I imagine that would be the MGM HD transfer which will look like the Subkultur release. I had a capture of this and always thought it looked great which is the reason I bought the Subkultur disc.

I find it amusing that people declare a film transfer that has been personally supervised by the man who created the movie to be inaccurate. If anyone knows how Scanners should look, wouldn't it be David?

I enjoyed the HD presentation on the new Criterion BD. It's a fun film, though not my favorite early Cronenburg, but The Brood is the release that I have really been waiting for.

Just because Cronenberg supervised doesn't mean he didn't change the look of the film. I would love to see an original source to see what the color timing was in theaters because I would place money that it's different than this Criterion release.

He used no references whatsoever to time the movie. There are multiple reports, including actual reference prints that contradict Cronenberg's transfer. He timed it to how it wants it to look now, and/orr how he believed it looked then. But either way, it does not appear to be accurate to the theatrical presentation. There's no disc that seems to perfectly mirror the original print, but the German one definitely comes closest.

No problem at all. I definitely intend to hang onto both discs as the extras on the Criterion disc are extensive. However, if I want to watch the film again I will turn to the DE disc.

Well I guess this becomes another Star Wars debate.
Which is correct: Artist intent, or original theatrical presentation?
