At the very least they could have released an attachable PS2 disc drive that could load up PS2 games on the PS3 or PS4.

Nintendo should stay more generous on the BC feature or they're going to lose a lot of fans.
You act as if PS2'S are somehow impossible to come by. Ebay is chock full of them. Amazon has a PS2 slim for sale right now for 52.00.

It's all redundant anyway if the nx doesn't even have a disc drive there's not going to be any BC. It's convenient for consumers to be able to play everything on one console but it's just not practical to have it if it's adding extra cost either to the console itself or by having to have a team working on it.

Only reason Xbox one added it was because they were in the back foot and needed some good press. I'm sure if they were in Sony's place they wouldn't have bothered.

I think Sony are just taking a leaf out of Nintendo's book and trying to get us to buy old games again rather than let us play the discs we already have.

I just looked back over the old fusion ds fusion terminal thread and the more info we get the more and more it sounds like that "fake" rumour is actually truer than we thought. Everything from the more powerful hardware to the haptic feedback dual thumb sticks.

Either these new rumors are just rehashing what was in the old fusion leak to get page hits or the fusion leak was actual legit, take a look https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=235470

In terms of BC on NX, I'm guessing the NX will play all of the virtual console stuff from NES to Gamecube. However I'll bet Wii and WII U BC won't play on NX.

I didn't think we were including VC in the BC debate since its but really BC is it? You have to buy all your games again which I thought was why people were complaining about not having it as a built in feature.

I'm talking about carry over from Wii U. If you bought VC games through your Wii U, I could see those carrying over to your NX.

It'll be a big risk if theres no disc drive, aside from the lack of BC it'd be one less thing it can do (playing DVD's and Blu-rays) though I'm not entirely sure that's something that Nintendo is concerned about. Maybe the lack of disc drive will help the NX seeing as it will make it a purely gaming machine which it seems is what people want.

In this day and age of digital streaming, I honestly don't think having dvd/blu ray playback is that big a deal. I can tell you first hand that despite my blu ray collection, I watch WAY more Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, etc than I do my disks. I think it's more important that Nintendo offers those services on NX than it is to have an optical drive.

Shouldn't have to pay £52 just because Sony couldn't be bothered to keep backwards compatibility as a feature for the PS3.

Agreed on this point. I don't need a gaming system to play movies, however I absolutely do want it to have a disc drive.

You're being unreasonable and frankly, a little entitled. BC on a console is a luxury, not a necessity. No console provider is obligated to provide built in BC on their current console with their previous consoles. It's not cost-effective and the numbers prove that most consumers do not feel that it's an essential feature.

Why? I mean, if you don't care if it has movie playback, what difference does it make whether or not it has an optical drive?

Maybe because the people who buy PS4s and Xbox Ones don't care because they see themselves as 'hardcore' gamers, meaning that all they need is a console and the terrible Call of Duty. I think Nintendo would find a lot less people buying their consoles if they drop backwards compatibility.

Because I like to own my games and not rent a license that might not transfer over to a next generation.

I thought you were speaking specifically to optical drives, as in DVD/Blu Ray drives. So you're good with Nintendo putting their games on solid state ROM chips?

I don't care how they do it, I just want a tangible game be it a disc or card.

Only reason it won't have a disc drive is because it'll use flash cards instead.

Although I honestly don't think that's the right way to go. discs are surely still the cheapest option. How much does a 50gb BD cost vs a flash card of the same size?

I personally want backwards compatibility for space reasons. Less devices taking up room means more available space as well as more available HDMI ports on my TV. As is, I have my PS2, PS3, PS4, and Wii U all connected to my TV, which only has 3 HDMI ports. Once I have an Xbox One, that PS3 will have to go downstairs...same with the Wii U once I get the NX. I just wish I could pop Black Ops 2 into my PS4 and play Mob of the Dead, especially since my PS3 isn't working like it should. Would be nice to have, but I guess there's nothing I can do about it. I'm not really too fussed with backwards compatibility on the NX since most of the games I wanna play like Mario Kart and SSB will get NX remakes.

I don't think Nintendo could lose a lot less people to be honest

And as it's already been said, the lions share of BC on Wii U/3DS is via Virtual Console anyway, and if the NX doesn't have a disc drive what are you going to do then?

I always find to best to distance myself from people who refer to themselves as "hardcore gamers"
