Granted I never bothered with the PS UHD but I found this transfer to be such an unpleasant and distracting visual experience that I almost switched it out for the BD around the halfway mark. I stopped myself from doing it but I really wanted to. Not saying the old BD is better but I’m pretty sure I had a grimace on my face during the whole movie while watching the UHD. |

I will concede that his "dive" from the plank at the end of the film is one of the high water marks in the history of cinema.

No playback issues here. US Standard edition.
Watched this last night and had a great time and was overall impressed with the audio / video quality. Like many others have said, I wish there was more grain to be had. However, it didn't distract me or take me out of the experience. The HDR was used quite well, and I really appreciated the added sharpness, especially in the wider outdoor shots. Very pleased with the purchase. |

I watched this last night and, if I had to sum up with one word… Disappointed. Not terrible. Not abominable. And, especially, not dark. Just disappointed.
I will start with the good. Shadow detail and near dark depth really shined compared to all over versions. This is a dark film at times and the ability to pierce that darkness is a testament to the HDR format. Colors are also nice, if not, at times, different to what I am used to. The pirate ship scene, the one with Mikey alone with Willy, really shines as an example of the nice HDR and color palette this film can achieve, with all the piles of gold and jewelry shining. I, also, enjoyed the soundtrack. I thought it improved the dynamic range and bass extension quite nicely over previous versions. Not exactly faithful to an OG soundtrack, but I enjoyed it. Now, for the not so good. DNR, oh why do you mess with me? Is this a disaster of a DNR mess? No. Not even close. Does it do just enough for me to notice and cry foul? Yes. Look, detail is pretty good, so the newer implementations of DNR (See Inception) is not wiping away fine detail as much as it used to. But, it is leaving behind an unnatural and digital looking image at times. “At times” is the key word. It’s like a layer of smoothness takes over the image. I don’t like it. Maybe that’s why I liked the darker scenes better, as the lack of grain and the smoothness of the outdoor scenes was less apparent. The color also flips from, “wow that looks nice” to orange faces galore. I don’t know. I did some A-B’ing with the blu and there were some scenes where the blu looked more preferable to me than the UHD. But those were mainly at the beginning of the film in the daylight, once they go underground the HDR does slaughters the old blu. Again, not a tragedy, just disappointed. I want my Astoria, Oregon looking gritty and gray. We got the gray just not the grit. |

I thought the image quality looked good. I can't fault the film for having a dreary look when that was intended.
Lack of film grain bothered me. The 5.1 mix is fun, but wish we had the original stereo mix and if any catalog title deserved a ATMOS mix it is this one. The atmospherics are nearly constant on this rainy, stormy, windy, wet film. Just a head scratcher why WB declined doing an ATMOS mix. I guess this 4K disc will be reissued many times before they think about adding to it. |
