And public opinion is...this is freaking awesome LOL.

It's just certain enthusiasts on message boards like this who think this is some travesty. On social media, etc., in general I see people almost universally thrilled.

I mean, it's win win for them - if they still want to go to the theater, they can. Nothing is lost. If they want to watch it at home, they can. That's a gain.

The average consumer isn't upset about being given more choices in how they consume their content. A bunch of whiny rich people complaining in trade publications that those patrons now have consumer choice just makes those whining look bad, not WB who looks like the hero here to the average person.

I am just going to say sure. Because there is no way to validate that statement. This site is still a form of social media.

Going through the list - and how heavy it starts, in February (!), I can't disagree, though it will be a technicality.

I'm sure they all will be technically released in theaters (where theaters remain open at that point) but the question is, how long will that exclusivity be. There was no mention of that as far as I can tell. It could be a week or two before they hit Disney+, either paid or not, for all we know at this point.

The idea that there will be many theaters even open in February when this slate comes is pretty fantastical at this point. Yes, a vaccine will soon be trickling out - to front line health care workers and people in elderly homes - not exactly going to be the group then running out to see the latest Disney movie theatrically.

Given the current skyrocketing infections, and that is projected to get even worse again over the holidays - we are going to be in emergency lock down state in many areas of the country again this winter (some already are). Even if everything goes perfectly, it will be nearly a year from now before enough people are vaccinated and life returns to any semblance of "normal" (and it will be a new normal, at that).

Disney knows this, just like WB knew it - Disney is just playing it's hand closer to the vest.

This is a site (and a specific sub-forum) where people gather to specifically talk about the industry.

In more general social media, comments on articles in mainstream publications, etc. - there is no one saying "Damn you WB! I want you to force me to go to the theater to see these movies! How dare you give me the choice to watch it at home, too!"

I mean, from a consumer standpoint, it's laughable to think that giving an alternate choice is a negative thing.

Not sure if your time frame is accurate on this. I think it’ll much sooner that we will be able to get back to some normalcy. Once the right people are vaccinated then things get a lot better and fast. I think with proper safety measures theaters can open fairly soon here. We’ll have to see. You are right though in that the nursing home patrons and such aren’t big theater goers anyways.

I just hope that everyone is thinking this through if we end up with extremely proprietary content scattered amongst several apps and services that you’d have to subscribe to. Then, there are those of us that like physical media for the best content and that could take a big back seat or be outright disregarded entirely and that’s bad IMO.

Yup you summed it up nicely here. People here care about presentation quality. 99.999% of people I've met don't. If they did they wouldn't be watching super compressed streaming on a cheap LCD TV with washed out blacks on a TV cranked up to the max vivid settings with motion smoothing on. (As an aside I get that not everyone has the funds for nice gear, but at least make the best of what you've got and adjust it properly)

When I was told by other engineers that my complaints about out of focus, dim, etc projection or lights in the auditorium washing out the image I was seen as overly picky it was a bit of an eye opener. To some even complaining about talking during a movie was seen in that light

Fox holdovers from 2020 that they are contractually obligated to release theatrically are holding up those numbers. Now that Fox is being turned into a Hulu film provider Disney's theatrical releases per year are gonna plummet.

The money is in Disney+/Hulu/Star

250M subs X $8 each = $2 billion/mo. X 12 = $24 billion

Notice I took 250M not 260M and we can be assured that by 2024, Disney+ will be more than $8 a sub.

That's only Disney+. It does not include either Star or Hulu which will add another 100 million subs.

Disney's best year at the BO was 2019 @ $13 billion GROSS.

As long as these are playing in SOME theaters and those who want to see them on the big screen can, it's not a total wash.

Time will tell, for sure. However, I think that he's being quite optimistic, if anything. The average person is not going to be vaccinated until late spring, at best (I'm leaning closer to fall); even then, I don't see people rushing out to pack movie theaters. That's to say nothing of the anti-vaxxers, others who will require lots of encouragement to get vaccinated, and those that neglect to even show up for their 2nd booster vaccine. We're going to be feeling the effects of all this for years to come. I can't imagine anything getting back to "normal" (as if such a concept actually exists) until 2023, and I think that's pretty optimistic.
