Then, you must run the backup utility and dump everything to a FAT32 formatted external drive. As for trophies, they are backed up on servers ONLY AS FAR AS your last "Trophy Sync". If you got trophies and didn't perform a trophy sync, those will not carry over. As soon as you attempt to put your hard drive in a DIFFERENT PS3, you will be forced to format it. |

Nice thing I found out about Quicktime movies and getting them to work on the PS3.
Go to any page link on quicktime.com where the icons for 480p,720p and 1080p are resident. Using your browser (I use firefox) go to "edit" "page source". You will see the links. Do CNTL F to search 1080p etc. Copy and paste any link with .mov on the end into the URL of your browser. Before hitting enter, put a h in the link right before the resolution number. So http://movies.apple.com/movies/indep...icker_720p.mov Becomes http://movies.apple.com/movies/indep...cker_h720p.mov (notice the h) Hit enter, you will be prompted to SAVE A$ Put into a program called PS3 video 9 (video conversion software that needs to be downloaded).. copy to PS3. This bypasses the need for any QT software. I've been doing this quite a while when I've been bored. It allows you to see things in 1080p for free, even if its just a trailer. Recently done 2012, Alice in wonderland.. People come round and get really excited. Quicktime usually has more content than any other website. so its all you need. |

It would auto format because its a new hard drive to the system. As far as I know, there is no work-around to not formatting a new hard drive into a PS3.

I believe it's assigning a code or identifier of the HDD on the flash or something. So it knows the HDD you have in there isn't the one that's "synced" aka formatted to the PS3. I took out my 60GB HDD for my 320, for example, thinking I could use the 60 as a backup. It doesnt' work that way, once the 320 was restored, the PS3 now sees the old 60 that it came with as a "new" HDD (even though it has PS3 data on it).

Yet why pay for a remote if you don't really have to. Yes I get some points made around forums here. All GREAT points for getting a remote, but it's free to use the controller.
The PS3 controller works well for some BD's, and I can navigate around the menus with no problem. Changing my audio to lossless tracks and playing special features. BUT for some (and especially when I watched last night The Shawshank Redemption) I had an insane problem navigating using the controller. It doesn't allow the use of the nav arrows or the joystick knobs to move the cursor or highlight what you want to select. It doesn't move! Why is the nav buttons on the controller not the nav buttons for some BD menu systems. It just stays there. I finally used down and X to get around, but only out of luck did I select the lossless audio track. 20 minutes to get the track. Simple buttons still worked. Is there a reason why the buttons for play change for each BD? Start or X for play, from BD to BD? and why sometimes the nav buttons on the left and/or the joystick knobs don't move the cursor on the screen (rarer)???!!!! Starting to annoy me. Anyone can help explain the nav problems?, other than saying get a remote. lol |

Update on PS3 YLOD sent to Sony
I had previously asked if Sony would accept PS3's that had been opened and worked on. I have done a reflow on my PS3, and in the process ended up with a few extra screws, a slightly damaged hard drive bay, and obviously a voided warranty sticker. I was concerned that Sony would decline my request for a refurbished system to be sent to me, since the YLOD came back. I only reflowed it in order to back up my data. I receieved word over the weekend that a refurb will be at my house by Wednesday. That's only one week after I shipped it to Sony myself. So to conclude, anyone worrying about opening up their PS3 and ruining their chances that Sony will still send them a refurb after the YLOD comes back, let this ease your mind a bit. Perhaps I got a nice technician. Regardless, just be careful when you open your PS3 and Sony will still honor your service request, and in an extremely timely manner. Worst case, you get your money refunded to you and they decline service. Now only if they realize they have an epidemic, and cut the $149.99 fee entirely. |

Someone i know sent in a reflowed system with a broken hard drive, laser hanging by a thread, in the worst shape possible. He took all the bad parts from all his PS3s and stuck them into this ps3 and then mailed it to sony. Sony sent him a refurb anyway lol. They dont care as long as you pay 150.

The 60GB PS3 I sent to Sony after JDElectronics couldn't fix the subsequent issues after the original YLOD I sent it in for was repaired and I received the same unit back ('tho my loose first USB attachment on the PS3 has apparently detached and fallen off while at Sony's Laredo TX repair center, but hey-I still have 3 other ports heh). And within a week's time! Just happy to be back in business; now here's about a month's worth of catching up to do with the PS Store ![]() |

Well all you have to do is order a new lazer lens for your ps3 and take the top and the other piece under that out then you unscrew 4 more screws and unhook 2 clips located at the top and the bottom. Then you take off the shock observers located on the corners of the old lazer lens. Slide them on the new one and carefully place it on then put the clips in the same spots you took them out. Then screw the four screws back in, and place the cover on screw that on and put the top on and screw the final screws. This saves you time and maybe a little of your money. Hope this helps. If it does it again that is.

Just got my refurb PS3 in yesterday. Performed the restore utility, and a little disappointed with the results...
No Game Data Majority of my Album Art is gone Videos out of order Pictures out of order All System & Video Settings gone No Demos or any downloaded games or DLC exist on my console I thought this stuff got backed up? Why else would my backup be close to 30gb big? Is there anyway to recover this stuff? All the import dates for my media show yesterday's date, and I had previously had everything sorted by import date. Some of my albums are scattered and broken up among the list of 'All'. Essentially, the only thing I got back from the restore were my saved games, that's it. Took a few hours redownloading everything last night and reinstalling what I wanted. What a hassle. If I knew, I wouldn't have even backed up in the first place. I was assuming it would perform as if I took an image of a computers hard drive, and put everything back identical to how it had been. Is there an additional step to resolve any of these issues, or is that basically what we're stuck with after a restore? |

It can't have been the same console; if you look at the online manual it explains that some content can't be restored from a back up to a different console. Clearly this is to prevent copying from one machine to another.
You say the order of your files was wrong, I would have thought this was down to the options returning to their defaults; press triangle and you change the way folders are listed. I changed the hard drive on my PS3 a while ago, backed up everything and when I restored it to my new hard drive nothing was missing. Trophies will show for games (and game saves) that are no longer on your system. I have 100% on Linger in the Shadows but it's not on my console at the moment. |
