Actually, most people see this as a chick flick.

I think you're talkin' to the wrong people. I have never heard Casablanca referred to as a "chick flick".

Don't look at me. I'm just as insulted as you guys are. Apparently, I've lost my masculinity years ago because of the stuff I watch. That's why I hate society.

I love Casablanca and don't think of it as a film noir or a chick flick. But if I had to pick, it's more of a chick flick.

Actually, I still think, brother, that "most people" is pushing it. Whoever wrote that crap for AMC is an overpaid moron. The next two, I think, were forcing the point to fit it into a "chick flick" article. I couldn't read the fourth one 'cause by then I wuz busy throwing up. I don' know, but I think Humphrey Bogart would punch anyone who suggested that he made chick flicks - although he did make some fantastic romantic movies (Casablanca & The African Queen, just to mention two).

Chick flicks originally dealt with "a film genre mainly dealing with love and romance and designed to appeal to a largely female target audience." Or, as the Urban Dictionary puts it : "A film that indulges in the hopes and dreams of women and/or girls ... A film that has the following formula: Two people fall in love. They get along fine. There is some kind of misunderstanding. They break up. They get back together. The end." Bogart movies have always appealed to men at least as much as (if not more so than) women.

As far as that "lost ... masculinity" thing goes; perhaps, and this is just a suggestion, NOT a criticism : first, stop listening to bozos like those "writers" you linked to, and second ... maybe consider a ... more ... masculine avatar? Seeing yerself that way cannot help your dudeness confidence - not that mine is exactly John Wayne, but still ...

Yes because sites like "Bro Bible", "Date Daily", and "The It lists: A Fashion and Trend Blog" are such great reputable sources to make such a claim. I'm pretty sure you actually googled it after you made the claim, so I highly doubt it's the basis for it. . Most people in fact do not consider it a chick flick, and any site worth talking about wouldn't label it as such either.

edit; Even "Date Daily" pretty much explains that it's not really a chick flick in their post:

Quote:
To call Casablanca a chick flick would be doing injustice to one of the best films of the 20th century but, the fact is, your girlfriend will love the intense romance at the heart of this story.
And Bro Bible? The writer has never even seen the movie

Quote:
"Casablanca" Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman Why it's acceptable to see it: I have never seen this because I hate old movies, but it's a classic and with a name like Humphrey, you better believe he can stimulate a labia like its nobody's business

Fantastic sources

A roll eyes smiley is way out of line? For real now?

Who was saying people on this forum are way oversensitive again?

The new transfer is nearly perfect, and leaps and bounds better than the old one. The rest is subjective preference IMO (it seems one always has to include that, as many people think one speaks in absolutes otherwise. LOL).

I am very happy with the new transfer.

I would be curious to know if they had the original negative for everything, or if they had to resort to interpositives etc. for some scenes, hence the grainier picture in parts?

I'm not saying paulgeneacepeter was correct and that I agree with him. In fact, I strongly disagree as I think the new transfer looks great. But Paul's post was just an opinionated post, nothing else. It didn't warrant a "roll eyes" attitude. What retablo could've done is disagree with him and state why. A "roll eyes" smiley is used when someone is angry and wants to start an argument. Why start such an hateful argument over a simple opinion on a Blu-ray transfer??

Hence the reason why I hate society. I never said they were correct or reputable. I'm just saying that society sucks and that they like to be judgmental over what people watch.

That is exactly the point I'm trying to make. People judge me because I watch "chick flicks" and have a girl in my avatar. FYI, I watch whatever movies that entertain me. And I put a picture of Kaley Cuoco in my avatar because I think she's the most beautiful woman in the planet. Why must I stop doing what I like because society defines it as "unmasculine?"

EDIT- Avatar removed. Must.... protect.... my..... masculinity.....

Dude, we own a lot of the same movies, with one big exception : I own way more "chick flicks" than you do (check the list), and that doesn't even include the DVD's I haven't had the time to list or that BRDC doesn't even have slots for. The thing is, I don't care who knows it or likes it. They can go jump. And please don't go avatar-less on my account. Although I must admit that I've never understood guys using girls as avatars (I get easily confused ), I was being just a wee bit facetious as I didn't and wouldn't doubt your masculinity based on movie choice or avatar - but I did think that maybe a picture of John Wayne or Duke Nukem might help out with those who do.

Because Kaley Cuoco is the most beautiful woman on the planet and I admire her beauty so much, so I like having her in my avatar. I can stare at that pretty little thing all day.

Again, I agree w/ your final statement! It's deservedly one of the all time great films.

To me, film noir was a cycle of American (mostly, but some notable movies from other countries as well) films that reflected the underbelly of American culture during and after WWII. It usually involved loners who were morally ambiguous, where the good guy didn't always win.

In Casablanca, Rick is initially similar to a noir protagonist, but he specifically represents the US prior to entering the war. He's settled in his nest and doesn't want to stick his neck out. By the end, however, he realizes that he must get involved - both for his own good and because he realizes that he also values the rest of the world.

Just using a stereotypical type stereotype from chick flicks, brother. Whatever & whoever you are, you write like a champ. And since I haven't been back in the city for almost a decade now (and may never get back again ), I'm unlikely to ever bump into you and find out in person.

P.S. I just watched all 5 Movies on the UK Westerns Collection you recommended and the quality was uniformly high-to-great. Not bad, five primo transfers for $25.67 total. Thanks again, MifuneFan ...

lol, I was just messing around, pretending to get mad about the plumber part, while jokingly accepting the 500 pound part.

I'm really glad you like the Western set, it's really a great value for all the films included

Not at all. Sure, it's preference to like something one way or another. Problem is, the film was only shot to be ONE way... not several. Casablanca has been misrepresented for years with an overly bright transfer that was NOT the intended look. Honestly, I don't care what someone prefers, the film should presented as its meant to be. Thankfully, now it is, but you still have people holding onto the incorrect version of the film because they like things overly bright and shiny.
