I never understand this used as a criticism, a lot of films are pointless, am I missing out on films that change the course of history, I just don't get how films being pointless make for them being bad, I could name thousands of pointless films that aren't bad, but people like them because they are called a thing called entertaining.

I'm actually going to guess at least 95% of movies are pointless, very few movies actually change Hollywood or how people experience going to the movies. Doesn't mean most movies suck, just means there aren't a lot of groundbreaking films out there and that's not a bad thing.

Think he would've won an Oscar for that performance if it hadn't been so similar to his performance as corrupt Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day from the year before.

Erm. Training Day is 2001, Man On Fire is 2004, so that is not 'a year before'. Not to mention, that these two characters are very different.

Movies in themselves are pointless.I can't name one which has changed the course of history-and if there is one I bet it's a bad one which caused riots

Movies sholdnt affect a country to change history.
All they need to affect is people who will in turn change history.
There are many movies that effected people. In particular, at least 20 movies changed the way I think and the way I act and the things i do.

Do you need particular examples?

By the way, speaking of Washington, Can anyone name me a couple of his best movies?
I have seen only The man on fire which made me his fan instantly. (I have seen The Book of Eli too)

Those probably would be it; "Man on Fire" and "Training Day."

I personally didn't care for "MoF;" I didn't like its style (subtitled dialogue, wtf? ). But a lot of folks like it, and it was a good performance.

I would also suggest "American Gangster," "Crimson Tide," and "Glory." I'm sure other folks can list a few other good ones too.

If there's no point to the plot, and nothing else is there that you enjoy (wacky jokes or fantastic action scenes for example), then I can understand why some would call it pointless.

COP OUT.
Not as bad as I was lead to believe, picture and audio were fine. Tracey Jordan made me chuckle a bit. Bruce Willis played the same tough guy role he's mastered for years......roll on Die Hard 5!

why must they change history to not be pointless? when i'm finishing off a bowl of popcorn and am wildly satisfied on my couch, that's more important than a film ever needs to be. isn't history itself arguably pointless? written only by the victors? and only by the literate among the victors?

if all movies were "great", then what would define "great"? great = exceptional / rare.

a mercedes is only a mercedes because the kias, dawoos and geos of the world exist.

so, no, the 95% of films aren't "pointless," they're very important: without them you wouldn't have "great" films
