I don't know for sure, but a lot of Funimation blu-rays from that era have the same issue. A lot of those issues aren't present in the Amazon stream either.

Yeah, I think I'm with you on your dubbing assessment. Alison Keith-Shipp's voice was ROUGH in Amazon 1.11 but she absolutely killed the original. To be fair, she's still great in the Amazon 1.11 it's just her voice is straining.

And I'll add Trina Nishimura was a far superior Mari, especially with her screams.

Also, just to make things more complicated, I think the original 3.33 Funi dub might be the superior of the 3. I actually had the pleasure of hearing that one during its limited NA theatrical release and the audience was howling during the now-omitted Shinji/Kaworu innuendo dialogue and especially Asuka's "He's not a brat, he's an ass-hole" line.

Oh yeah, her performance was still fine. Clearly there just wasn't as much time or care put into that dub, and I still believe she sounded ill. If they had the time and budget as FUNi, I feel like they would've waited on her voice to recover.

Last year I watched FUNi 1-3 and Prime 4, and honestly, I kinda forgot Mari was recast since Deneen's voice sounds so similar. But Trina got some great lines. I love "Just. F*cking. DIE." from 2.22 (even if Jennifer Love Hewitt had that same line in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer).

And I enjoyed hearing some past ADV voice actors in other roles, like Greg Ayres (DC Kaworu, FUNi Kensuke) and Monica Rial (DC Ibuki, FUNi Pen-Pen).

Oh I'd love to live in the alternate universe where that dub was just accepted by Khara and they didn't start meddling with the localization like they have.

i was taking a look at the technical specs of that blu-ray set releasing in December, and... if they did bring the 4K versions of 1.11 and 2.22 over here eventually, i'm pretty sure it would just be those same discs. meaning that it's just gonna be 1080p scaled up.

besides HDR and all the other color stuff (i'm not too much of a whiz in that), wouldn't they look pretty similar to if you just put the 1080p disc in and watch it on a 4K display? maybe it's a case by case thing... i'm interested in hearing people's perspective on that

HDR presentations generally look noticeably different from chroma-clipped Rec.709 SDR, and professional upscale methods are a bit different from the type of basic upscaling consumer TVs and players perform.

Personally I have no clue re: what color space the new upscales of 1.11 and 2.222 will be encoded in. They may be SDR in a Rec.2020 container.

Nice they're finally putting them back into production, I only ever saw the Rebuild with the original dubs the one time I saw them in general so I wouldn't be able to tell the difference with a new dub. I never got the Funimation releases because I figured they'd do a box set once the 4th came but then all that went down and obviously never happened... and I didn't get 3.0+1.11 because I didn't have the originals, and the 4K not having HDR made me less interested in that.

I'll get them but in no rush since I'm not worrying about slipcovers since I already missed 3.0+1.11, and 3.33 isn't coming yet.

Not even 1080p upscaled, but from what they said, it sounds like a 4K upscale of a 1080p upscale of 720p films.
And it would apparently still be BT.709 for the first two Rebuilds in 4K.

Wishful Thinking (Obvi-Dumb Edition): the first 3 Rebuild movies [1.11; 2.22; 3.33] put on the same 4K SDR (BD-100) disc with ALL available bonus features across said 3 movies on one blu-ray (BD-50) disc~

The Collector's Edition is where there's a bonus 4K SDR (BD-100) disc with said movies with OG FUNI dubs and subs included and maybe just the movies on a single blu-ray disk in either variant anyway, but I'm already pushing this wish so far as it is and I'm shutting up so they can take my money if said wish comes true~

Wouldn't that be a problem for 3.33 since that one isn't upscaled?

...It'll still fit on the disc~ XD

But seriously, I don't see why it wouldn't be upscaled to match in general... Would it be a problem if the disc was a BD-66 with all three movies upscaled? Maybe, thus why I went with the BD-100 just to be on the safe side~

They would barely fit on one disc even if you left the first two at 1080p.

I just wanted to see the first three movies released in steelbooks, whether 4K or HD, to match up with the 3.0+1.11 steelbook. I've got the original Funi releases but don't like the miss-matched packaging for them.

I find it interesting how they're releasing 1.11 and 2.22 Blu-ray-only in presumably digipaks in slipboxes, which is inconsistent with how they released 3.0+1.11 Blu-ray-only.

I figured Blu-ray-only editions would feature this artwork in a Blu-ray case with a slipcover like with 3.0+1.11.

These already will be inconsistent with the 4K digipak for 3.0+1.11 for the spines. Note the GKIDS logo and the placement of the SKU SF-[00000].

Still hoping they put out 4K digipaks for the first 3 to match. I bought the RE in addition to the CE to complete the Blu-ray-only collection, the spines matched up mostly well.

Apart from the (huge !) differences tied to colour space and ranges supported, the UHD BD format offers 10-bit video, HEVC, and much higher bitrates. It may be very interesting to produce 1080p HEVC 10-bit UHDBDs (i.e abiding to the UHD BD specs) for these movies. Sure the encoded video is not 4K, but I am positive that (anime) customers will support such release.

Anyway khara has likely produced 4K upscales for the upcoming 30th box set. A bit of a shame as that's just wasted bits for these 2 movies.

yeah, they 100% confirmed they're upscales/upconversions to 4K on this site: https://www.evangelion.jp/about_version_numbers.html

So better to wait for 30th box set than these re-releases? Only have 3.0+1.0 on 4k so far

Depends how long you're willing to wait (assuming you haven't seen them yet and are eager to watch them). Could be a long wait for the US 4k releases (as in 1 year+).

Makes sense, seen them multiple times but just never got the BDs, will hold off as I'm actually trying to narrow my collection atm (but adding these in 4k would be great with the new space haha)

Thanks for the insight

Longer than that for a box set because of 3.33.

I never liked the design of the standard 3.0+1.0 release, but I was able to tolerate it under the assumption that it would inevitably match the rest of the Rebuild series. Now I hate it, lol. Maybe the lack of 3.0 at the moment is because they'll release it alongside a new version of 3.0+1.0 that matches with the rest of the series?
