For who? A growing number of schools LOSE money playing in garbage bowl games that nobody goes to. Some of these pointless bowls don't draw 30k people.

For the bowls? ESPN pays a good chunk of change for all of those garbage bowls.

A few more than a handful:

Of note for this discussion, Georgia Tech does not appear on the list (which include JuCo schools) and UMD is towards the way bottom, making a tad bit more than Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary.

From 60 Minutes and Michigan's AD:

Quote:
Dave Brandon: The business model of big-time college athletics is primarily broken. It's, it's a horrible business model.

Armen Keteyian: Broken.

Dave Brandon: Broken. You've got 125 of these programs. Out of 125, 22 of them were cash flow even or cash flow positive. Now, thankfully, we're one of those. What that means is you've got a model that's not sustainable in most cases. You just don't have enough revenues to support the costs. And the costs continue to go up.

But I was surprised to see my alma mater on that list... though this is before our football program expenses (but we are non-scholarship there).

Yeah, 22 of the 125 DI schools. There are still alot of DII and DIII schools on that list that make some decent money - probabaly a lot when you aren't paying millions for a head coach.

He has to be one of the longest serving assistant coaches ever. Monte has been coaching since 1966 without any break. During that entire time he was only a head coach for 3 years at NC State. That's like 43 years as an assistant.

Wow I didn't know that. He much really like being assistant. The collage game is not for him, his defense might be to complicated for the collage kids.

I was thinking they don't need to spend as much for travel, recruiting, and they probably don't even have many sports.

Interesting how many BCS schools aren't on the list of money-makers.

Its not that the programs dont make money, they have commitments ($) to the University that support the other athletics. Anything above that is called 'profit'

I'm hearing that Mike Gundy is very high on the list of both Arkansas and Tennessee. I think he has created a very good thing at Oklahoma State and shouldn't leave. (Especially with the Pickens booster connection)

Lots of them take subsidies from the states (one reason why UMD is in the red).

Yes, I understand the difference between revenue and profit. But what point are you making?

Adding that a football program not making money is a farce, so when the Michigan AD says they turn a profit, it means either the rules for the reporting of revenue are strict (not in his case) or that they actually make so much money above their budgets that hey cant find an expense for it and have to turn it over to the University.

Just trying to give further support to your point, don't take it as a dig.

If my team (Louisville) ends up losing Charlie Strong, I wouldn't mind Tom Jurich going after him.

Man of the day.

Quote:
Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk has been a one-man Motorin' machine this season, and nothing demonstrates his tenacity and rushing ability more than this long touchdown run today against Oklahoma State, two-thirds of which appear to have been completed after Seastrunk badly injured his hamstring.
