The BN sale next week, is it a coupon code or an across the board price reduction in Criterion titles? Is it a reduction off the current price? or will they do like CC did on their sale? IE offer 50% off MSRP, not what their normal price is?

I bit and finally got a credit card, completely not coincidentally just in time for the B&N sale
![]() Seeing as the Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara DVD set will probably not get a sorely needed Blu-ray upgrade, I guess I'll finally buy that too in addition to The Ice Storm, La Notte, and Life is Sweet come the fifth. |

I wonder what movie I'll watch tonight. Hmmmm? Should I watch Amour, The Turin Horse, Fargo or Ivan's Childhood? |

Watched The Game tonight. The transfer was softer than I expected but with all the lighting, I'm sure it was the look that Savides wanted.

I just finished watching The Public Enemy (1931), and cannot believe that it took me this long to check it out. That said, I'm glad that I waited until the film was available in a beautiful high definition presentation that belies its age.
I've always heard about James Cagney, because his name is ubiquitous in pop culture, but this was my first experience watching one of his films. He commands so much attention simply by way of presence and physicality, so I now understand his popularity. The Public Enemy has some amazing sequences, my favorite being a revenge scene in the rain toward the end. The scenes with Cagney and Jean Harlow are wonderful. Of course, everyone always talks about the grapefruit scene. That's no way to treat a lady. Tomorrow night, I'll move on to The Petrified Forest in this Ultimate Gangsters set. Once again, I'm calling on Criterion to tackle some of these big name gangster films, like Scarface. Even better, I'd love to see Criterion handle the Cagney/Bogart team-up films, Angels With Dirty Faces and The Roaring Twenties. |

Another big reason why I bought Ultimate Gangsters Collection: Classics, however, was that I have lately taken it upon myself to collect Blu-rays of film noir titles from the 1940s and 1950s, since high definition does wonders for those movies. The films in the Ultimate Gangsters Collection: Classics set are precursors to the peak film noir era in a sense, because many of the film noir titles utilized the same cinematography styles and character archetypes. I'll be spending a lot of time in November going through the film noir titles that have come to my doorstep from Olive Films and Kino, so I wanted to watch the four movies in this gangster set as a lead-in. Of course, Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney are both featured prominently in a handful of film noir titles, so it's good to see their early work in these gangster films. I'm pretty sure that Michael Mann pulled the conclusion of Heat straight from the conclusion of Little Caesar, albeit just as brilliantly. Last edited by The Great Owl; 10-29-2013 at 03:09 AM. |

You should watch some of the films on Hulu Plus or at least watch some trailers if you are undecided on that many. Or check IMDB and see what film-makers might have made other films you enjoyed. This would help you out a bunch.

Ausjdm: Spend 2 hours on Rotten Tomatoes and read the reviews and synopsis on each one and then you will know which 10 films you'll want to buy during the sale!
Rotten Tomatoes ALWAYS works for me. Don't trust other people's opinions. Some might say a certain film is great but that doesn't mean you'll like it! (especially if you're as picky as I am). Then again, if you're not picky and like to blind-buy, I can't discourage you. But I'd read up these films a bit on Rotten Tomatoes (or IMDB - but its not as addictive to me). |
